Paul Howes to quit, Labor to lose

Australia's highest profile unionist, Paul Howes, is expected to announce his resignation from the union movement on Monday.

Sources within the Australian Workers Union confirmed on Sunday night that Mr Howes, its national secretary, would announce his departure.

It was not clear if Mr Howes, who could not be reached for comment on Sunday night, would stand down immediately or see out the remainder of his term as head of the union.

He was re-elected its national secretary only last year. Mr Howes, 32, is engaged to Qantas executive Olivia Wirth and has, since announcing their relationship, been unwilling to comment on issues relating to the airline - where his union has hundreds of members. Mr Howes and Ms Wirth will marry in April.

debra, I know quite a lot about howes and have been wishing for his exit from the Trade Union movement for a long time, so has a lot of other Trade Union activists and lefties in general, it was a great day yesterday.

OMW, i just had another look at the post with the cartoon, "much beloved son of the left", seriously where does that come from, howes is a right winger, very much a right winger. A little research is a good idea every now and again. Howes left wing hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah. Now maybe that could be considered slander...

Boris, I wouldn't have a clue who's who as far as unionists & activists these days. All I know is that from past experience I'm glad I was a union member when I was working for a large multi -national company.
