Pell compares priests to truckers

He really did say this:

"If a driver sexually assaulted a passenger they picked up along the way,  I don't think it appropriate for the … leadership of that company be held responsible.''

Comparing children attending church to hitchhikers?!!!!!!!!!!!  Cat Surprised

If it were known then of course the leaders are responsible for not taking action to protect the victim. Turning a blind eye is as guilty as the perpetrator of the crime.

Not if the acts or intention to act is not known.

As you said the superior officer is responsible if no action is taken to prevent a crime if it is known. Is the officer responsible if he has no knowledge of the intent, and is only aware after the crime is commited.

I can see why the truck drivers  are not appreciating having their job being used as a comparison here.

Truck drivers, don't have minors in their care as part of their job.

People being employed to work in a childrens/youth home are the responsiblity of their employer, if they are acting inappropriately towards the minors, while on the job.

There were lots  of instances where priests were transferred after complaints from parents & children, rather than being dealt with appropriately.

Transferred to another parish where they could abuse minors again.

I would assume that any business or company that found one of their employees has molested a child, raped a woman etc would make a report to the police asap plus also immediately dismiss that employee. The Catholic church, usually coveredit up and moved the priest to another town  .... HUGE difference!

In answer to your question, most Japanese military personnel executed after World War 2 were not executed because they committed the crime. They were executed because they knew what was happening, had the power to prevent it, but did nothing.

Now apply the same standards to the Catholic Church hierarchy. The priests, were under the direct control of the church performing a faction on its behalf. They knew the offences were being committed, but because it was, at the time, considered in the best interests of the church to turn a blind eye, they did nothing; and in doing so, made themselves as culpable as the priest who committed the crime.

The church not only moves sinning priests away, they move sinning cardinals away, to the other side of the world.

The Catholic church are not alone in doing this. Many ministers are asked to resign and leave the church rather than the church suffer alegations

The problem is this is exactly what the Catholic Church didn’t do.

They didn’t dismiss them. They didn’t move them to a position where they could no longer offend. They knew the offending was happening but left the offender where they were, in the full knowledge that they would continue to offend.

Not entirely true.................... many were dismissed from the priesthood, many had charges laid against them. They are not the ones we hear about.

When you say not entirely true you're essentially saying it's mostly or partly true. You have conceded the point.
