Simone.............nice to see your son is taking an interest in photography................
Some constructive criticism:
First photo is out of focus........perhaps a higher F-stop might have helped.
Second photo is fine, in this case the out-of-focus works (look up "bokeh').
Third photo violates the "rule of threes", and can't be cropped.
Fourth photo is outstanding!
Fifth photo, once again has a really shallow depth-of-field (higher F-stop), and if the lens is the primary interest, it would help to flip the photo so that the printing is legible.
The 18-55 EFS lens is quite useful.........I would recommend a 55-250 or 70-300 lens next to broaden his range.
Here are some web sites that might stir his imagination further...

I thought I'd add my thoughts.... as a person seeing the photos from a different point of view(not a photographer).
There is a very distinct style to the photos that I really enjoy.
I love the placement of the plane in the photo for the very exact reason that it is probably not considered correct. I have no idea what that 3 rule thing is all about. I do know that darwinsmom mentioned that the rule often gets in the way of artistic choice.
The bird photo is the most in focus, etc. it is also the most predictible photo of the bunch. Anybody with a great camera, and those gorgeous colors to work with, is going to get that great photo.. eventually(I will admit that I've tried to get good photos of lorikeets, and I did not get anything close to that photo).I love that the writing on the camera is reversed. It tells us that the photo was taken in a mirror, and there is a lot of stuff going on in that photo, outside of the camera. I love the placement of his hands, and the softness of the photo. It feels nice. That photo tells a story.
I do think it is wonderful that band took the time to give a few tips that might enhance the incredible talent that shines in those photos.
Thanks for sharing those photos, Simon. It's really nice to see something different on the photo thread.

Darwin's mom and I often disagree over photographs............she hates HDR, and I embrace it. The only real problem with the plane photo is that it's cut off.......which limits the author's choices in cropping.

Hee hee. I thought that the gentleman was courteously offering the tired lady a piggyback home.
