Background out of focus is desirable in that shot. Even at 1/500 the wings have motion blur :(.
We don't have hummers where I am but to capture fast motion i use flash, sometimes works 🙂
I am still playing around with the sound/light activated flash, I l show some results when they come to hand 🙂

My old XTi uses a CF card...........they're all over 6 years old, never had a second's trouble with them........my daughter's two years' newer XS uses SD cards, and she's been having issues with them.

Apparently removing them from the camera or computer without ejecting or turning off first doesn't do them much good.
My SIL's died while we were on holidays at Norfolk Island. I've been getting an error message on the camera for a few days but ignored it as I have two cards in the camera. Now my computer is telling me I need to format the card.
I have managed to get it to read, and have retrieved the files. I'll be chucking the card and getting a new one. This was a Kingston branded card. I think they all come out of the same factory in china though

Gee whiz, Poddy, if you're going to use some poor animal's death as a photo op, at least put the gruesome, heartbreaking photo in a spolier box. Or, better yet, allow the animal some dignity in death and not take/post a photo of its bleeding carcass at all.

Art, the reason for that pic was so that people who have no idea what a Tassie devil looks like have the opertunity to see one , even if it is demised.

Actually, Imastawka posted a pic of a live one on one of the photo challenge threads.
They're very cute when they're not lying in a pool of blood.
