NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell has rejected a call for pink train carriages for women and children, saying it's more important to provide "real protection".
The NSW Rape Crisis Centre and the Rail Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) want the government to trial the pink carriages on the City Rail network for three months between 7pm and midnight.
The carriages would represent safe zones next to guard carriages exclusively for women and children.
"This option for women and children, with access to the guard and security alarms, may encourage women and children to go out and enjoy all that our city has to offer without being concerned about what may happen on in the train on the way home," the NSW Rape Crisis Centre's Karen Willis said.
RTBU National Secretary Bob Nanva said the system has been successfully used in Brazil, Japan, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Israel and Taiwan.
But Mr O'Farrell says women should feel safe travelling day or night on all carriages.
"I think what's most important for all passengers, but particularly for female passengers, is to have appropriate security across our train system," he told reporters.
"My focus is on getting police transport command controlling our train system - not on carriages that might be painted pink but don't offer any particular protection in the event of a problem," he said.
There were 203 reported cases of sexual assault and other sexual offences on the rail network in 2010, with women aged 18 to 29 most likely to be the victims, the RTBU said.

nope.. don't agree with it... yes women and children need to be kept safe but so do men... men get raped and beaten too. And robbed....
We need safe trains... unfortunately we will probably never go back to more train guards.
I always traveled on the first of last carriage in the early morning or late evening... it is something that i was taught and would teach my kids too....

i will probably be in the minority here but i like the idea. i had to travel from Sydney CBD to Western Suburbs after work, sometimes in the evenings, never felt safe.

i think it might have merit (the idea), bettter than this or this. but it will end up something like this with graffiti all over the carriage.

cats-back I agree with you, man are in just as much danger as females so there should not be special carriages just for females. To be honest I am getting a bit fed up with the calls for all these special carriages, on my train people are moaning and saying there should be a carriage for school kids, a carriage for screaming babies well sorry get over it I have been commuting every day for 20+ years and have had experience with all sorts and have learn't to just read my book and zone out
I am interested as to why you travel in the front or rear carriage as these are the furthest from the guard. I always travel in the second last carriage but this is due to these carriages being close to the stairs when I board and depart the train which means I can clear the station quickly without having to be stuck behind loads of people trying to get up the stairs.

I think it's ridiculous!
Pink carriages would be a signal to those with intent - "oh here we go heres the train with all the women and children in it, go for it mates"!

segregation
separate carriages for wimmens, beater wimmens, rapist males, non-rapist males, bogans, yer upper-class executive class, blogger mummies, blogger daddies

So long as it's not painted the same pink as in the Op's thread, yeh I could live with it. But more so for mothers and young children, trains can be damn right scary especially at night.
And I think the main point is not to draw attention to the PINK carriage, but to have increased security. And I can't see that being bad.

I think the colour of the carriages would be pretty close to the font in the OP.
