Malaysia Airlines says one of its planes has gone missing on the way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.

A statement from the airline says flight MH370 lost contact with air traffic controllers at 2:40am local time, just over two hours into the flight.

The plane, a Boeing 777-200, left Kuala Lumpur at 12:41am on Saturday, and had been due to arrive in Beijing at 6:30am local time.

The company says the plane was carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members.

The airline says it is contacting the next-of-kin of all passengers and crew, which includes people of 13 different nationalities.

In a statement on the airline's website, group chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said the airline was working with authorities to locate the aircraft.

"Focus of the airline is to work with the emergency responders and authorities and mobilise its full support," the statement said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected passengers and crew and their family members."

The airline says it will provide regular updates on its website.

The ABC understand Malaysia Airlines will hold a press conference on the incident shortly.

Nothing new to go on, so stuff gets repeated and repeated. The people who have it worst are the families and friends of the missing passengers & crew.

I wonder how many warships were used to prevent fishing vessels from entering the recovery zone off the Malaysian coast, where the missing plane was shot down, whilst all the debris and evidence was collected and stored -conveniently at same time search zone areas were reassigned?

.....MMmmmn

I thought your theory was that the plane had been vapourised by some secret ultra high tech missile and therefore there never was any debris to find

I know, me too. At least it's some new evidence to go on. As soon as nine msn announced "breaking news" I rushed to open the link as this plane disappearance/crash is so perturbing...

'We must keep in mind the task of locating these objects will be extremely difficult and it may turn out that they are not related to the search for flight MH370,' Mr Abbott said.

I think it is irresponsible of the PM to make public the sighting of debris before it has been more closely inspected. It is raising the hopes of the victims families, possibly falsely.

Yes, I don't see the point in announcing it, until they are able to identify the debris positively as being the missing jet.

.....the evidence is not 'new'. Would have been retrieved many days ago and now being presented as having just been 'found'.....in a 'new' locale.

Bet the 'black box' is either never found or damaged or has sections 'wiped'.

Where is your proof it is not new?  Your claims are becoming a little bit tedious P007. Why not wait patiently, and when the jet is found you can use the biggest boldest font you like to say I TOLD YOU SO. Smiley Happy
