Malaysia Airlines says one of its planes has gone missing on the way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.
A statement from the airline says flight MH370 lost contact with air traffic controllers at 2:40am local time, just over two hours into the flight.
The plane, a Boeing 777-200, left Kuala Lumpur at 12:41am on Saturday, and had been due to arrive in Beijing at 6:30am local time.
The company says the plane was carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members.
The airline says it is contacting the next-of-kin of all passengers and crew, which includes people of 13 different nationalities.
In a statement on the airline's website, group chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said the airline was working with authorities to locate the aircraft.
"Focus of the airline is to work with the emergency responders and authorities and mobilise its full support," the statement said.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected passengers and crew and their family members."
The airline says it will provide regular updates on its website.
The ABC understand Malaysia Airlines will hold a press conference on the incident shortly.

4 Corners reporter: "Why shoot it down if it's not hostile?"
Malaysian PM: " Well, the Americans would"

Correct me if I am wrong but it was not the Malaysian PM that said that it was the Minister for Defence.
on 20-05-2014 02:01 PM
yes, i believe you are correct.....I think the 'title' underneath was incorrect and had the Malaysian Min for Defence incorrectly labelled as the Malay PM.
Cheers for that rose robinas this is what I thought at the time too.

Update:
Pings not believed from MH370 black box: US Navy official
Underwater signals that focused the search for missing MH370 are no longer believed to have come from the black box, according to a US Navy official.
The Bluefin-21, operating from the Australian navy’s Ocean Shield vessel, has been searching a remote area of the Indian Ocean where four acoustic transmissions, believed to have come from the aircraft's black box, were detected in early April.
However, CNN reports officials now believe the acoustic pings did not come from the plane's onboard data or cockpit voice recorders, but instead from some other man-made source, according to Michael Dean, the Navy's deputy director of ocean engineering.
"Our best theory at this point is that (the pings were) likely some sound produced by the ship ... or within the electronics of the Towed Pinger Locator," Dean said.
If the pings had come from the recorders, searchers would have found them, he said.
"Always your fear any time you put electronic equipment in the water is that if any water gets in and grounds or shorts something out, that you could start producing sound," Dean said.
Other countries involved in the search had reached the same conclusion, he told CNN.
Australia is leading the search for the plane which vanished on March 8 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people onboard and is using the Bluefin-21 mini-sub until new equipment can be obtained.
The waters remain murky...

It comes as no surprise to myself that the media hyped alleged ULB signals were from other than a FDR . I base that on a little knowledge of the capabilities of the 37.5 Khz transducer used, its very limited range, and the fact that after "contact" it was never re-established. There also was the farce once of some Chinese "searchers" in a rubber dinghy holding a "locator" over the side and reporting signals.
Currently a ULB is to allow location of the CVR and FDR from a crashed aircraft when its approximate position is known. Flight 370 position is not known, and I doubt ever will be.

I hope I live long enough for this mystery to be solved!

Many authorities 'watched' the plane and are apparently aware of what happened. No-one is talking for now.
There is no mystery just secrecy.

Give it a rest , P007, you know nothing of aircraft operations let alone security protocols and human nature. Writing thoughtless and insensitive rubbish does you no credit whatsoever.
