Malaysia Airlines says one of its planes has gone missing on the way from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board.

A statement from the airline says flight MH370 lost contact with air traffic controllers at 2:40am local time, just over two hours into the flight.

The plane, a Boeing 777-200, left Kuala Lumpur at 12:41am on Saturday, and had been due to arrive in Beijing at 6:30am local time.

The company says the plane was carrying 227 passengers, including two infants, and 12 crew members.

The airline says it is contacting the next-of-kin of all passengers and crew, which includes people of 13 different nationalities.

In a statement on the airline's website, group chief executive officer Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said the airline was working with authorities to locate the aircraft.

"Focus of the airline is to work with the emergency responders and authorities and mobilise its full support," the statement said.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with all affected passengers and crew and their family members."

The airline says it will provide regular updates on its website.

The ABC understand Malaysia Airlines will hold a press conference on the incident shortly.

I hate to break it to you P007,  the film "Top Gun" was "entertaining"  flying nonsense.

Your post above P007 is a repeat of comic book nonsense . Do you ever bother to analyse Internet posts such as that one, and then add some relevant information?

"It was shot down plain and simple. As soon as the trailing "boogie" let it's "birds fly" and received that it got a confirmed hit, it turned off it's APX-72 IFF Transponder and POOF! Disappeared."

I doubt whether a blues  (boogie) fan would be lurking at 35,000  feet, perhaps  the author  was a bad speller, and meant the normal term for an unidentified aircraft  radar return  : bogey.

"Let its birds fly"  Marvel comics-speak ?.

"received that it got a confirmed hit," what?,  received from where, whom ?

" it turned off it's APX-72 IFF Transponder and POOF! Disappeared."

Think about that a little P007,  because it is in the same category as your "evil chemtrails" in broad daylight, nonsense.

If you wished to intercept another aircraft  you would not turn on your transponder (IFF), otherwise someone taking a break from reading Marvel comics would notice on FlightRadar 24  and also your track would be recorded.

Hint: you actually  would want to be "disappeared" all the time,  not after a sudden "POOF".

<----- retired US military tactical air controller.......

Gosh, I am a retired UK military interception  radar controller (GCI), also radar approach and talk-down experienced. Then I changed to flying the aircraft I used to watch on radar screens, military  in the UK, and civilian over here..

"Let the birds fly" that is classic.

P007, why do you think it is so easy to locate a ULB?

Well at least P007's posts are no more or less Alice in wonderland than some of the stuff that has been coming from so claimed  eminent  persons on this subject.

I think it's in poor taste to put up pics like that just now, given most posters here don't see the humour in it.

For the sake of the families waiting to hear news of their loved ones, I hope this is quickly determined one way or the other.
