It would be a real shame if they became extinct, David. I hope the Government actively steps in to help prevent that happening.

if we rely on the govt to save them i fear there is no hope

i doubt they have a future in the wild as mankind tends to take everything nature has in order to make money.

there will be no natural habitat left for these wonderous creatures sooner or later and thats not even allowing for natures effect

drought and bushfires and floods

they need clean running water

thats liquid gold to many

i pretty much am reigned to the platypus being only seen in captivity in the future

will they survive there? who knows.

The word “platypus” is derived from two Greek words meaning “flat foot”. Given that the plural of the Greek “pous” is “podes”, we presume that—strictly speaking— platypodes should be living in the Antipodes.

But, according to the Australian Pocket Oxford Dictionary, the accepted plural is “platypuses” or (particularly in scientific and conservation contexts) “platypus”.

The term “platypi” – commonly used in the past – is clearly incorrect, being derived from a Latin plural form.
