Coronavirus Care Army raises alarm after 80yo woman falls and breaks hip, trapped in house for days
isnt this how police should be shown in news stories
and not the stories of thuggery and lawlessness we often see.

...do we really need our Police Force to be rescuing old ladies fallen on the floor . . .
in that lady's case I say yes
but wouldn't that be a community issue?
I looked at the video. The appropriate 'community' response was to call the police. The 'community' members who called the police did the right thing. They didn't know if a crime had been committed. Taking matters into their own hands might contaminate a crime scene had there been one. Its easy to say after the fact that there was no crime, but they weren't to know that.
Who would you suggest is a suitable person to kick down the door the way the police did? Who should have that sort of authority?
Also, if that was you on the floor, God forbid, wouldn't you feel better seeing a policeperson rather than a plain clothed person approach you? I know I would.

for me, this event reinforces the need for the elderly who live alone to have one of those emergency alert things and/or to always have a charged up mobile within arms reach. Get up in the middle of the night to go to the loo . . . take your mobile with you.

Have you looked into these alarm systems? I have been checking them out due to a thread started by another member here.
They are very expensive without some sort of government subsidy.
And a charged up mobile nearby is not the answer. I always have my mobile in my pocket or beside me 24/7. The other day I tripped and my mobile flew out of my pocket, hit the tiled floor and ended up on the other side of the room.
There was no harm done but if I had come a real cropper I would have been in no position to just ring for help.
Looking back to 1995 when my mother died we bought Dad (82 at the time) a mobile phone but the problems of teaching him to use it were frustrating to say the least of it. We later got him an alarm and that too was not without it's frustrations.
To put it bluntly, just blithly saying elderly people should embrace new technology to keep them safe is easier said than done although it is easier now than it was 25 years ago as more elderly people have mobiles and are computer literate than back then.
Getting back to the original subject of the thread.....in NSW the police are the only authority able to conduct a Welfare Check. Even if someone calls the ambulance for a neighbour or friend who they have not seen for a while, the ambulance crew has to wait for the police to arrive and enter the house first. depending on what they find they then contact the appropriate authority....ambulance, local doctor etc.
If anyone reads the link they would see that the police were waiting for the ambulance to arrive to take the lady to hospital so they would soon be available to go back to chasing the local law breakers.
As far as I am aware the animals needing rescuing from trees and drains are usually put in the capable hands of the fire brigade....who do not spend every minute of every day fighting fires.

good morning lyndal,
I did some googling and found one for under $500, with no monitoring fees for the first year, and $45/year after that. That is less than $1 per week after the first year.
I will admit that I have only taken a cursory glance at this product webpage. Anyone thinking of getting one needs to do their own research to see if this one suits their needs.

What a terrible and evil thing to do; nobody to help her when people knew she was so vulnerable and alone, especially at this time.

Integrity Care SA sacks Ann-Marie Smith's carer over 'serious misconduct'

if its felt mt failure means i must resign then i will.
but no, its 'not my fault, its this that or the other guy you need to look at.'
