Have you looked into these alarm systems? I have been checking them out due to a thread started by another member here.
They are very expensive without some sort of government subsidy.
And a charged up mobile nearby is not the answer. I always have my mobile in my pocket or beside me 24/7. The other day I tripped and my mobile flew out of my pocket, hit the tiled floor and ended up on the other side of the room.
There was no harm done but if I had come a real cropper I would have been in no position to just ring for help.
Looking back to 1995 when my mother died we bought Dad (82 at the time) a mobile phone but the problems of teaching him to use it were frustrating to say the least of it. We later got him an alarm and that too was not without it's frustrations.
To put it bluntly, just blithly saying elderly people should embrace new technology to keep them safe is easier said than done although it is easier now than it was 25 years ago as more elderly people have mobiles and are computer literate than back then.
Getting back to the original subject of the thread.....in NSW the police are the only authority able to conduct a Welfare Check. Even if someone calls the ambulance for a neighbour or friend who they have not seen for a while, the ambulance crew has to wait for the police to arrive and enter the house first. depending on what they find they then contact the appropriate authority....ambulance, local doctor etc.
If anyone reads the link they would see that the police were waiting for the ambulance to arrive to take the lady to hospital so they would soon be available to go back to chasing the local law breakers.
As far as I am aware the animals needing rescuing from trees and drains are usually put in the capable hands of the fire brigade....who do not spend every minute of every day fighting fires.
