Protecting children from things adult and improper. Where should the boundaries be?

Protecting children from things adult and improper. Where should the boundaries be?

Today children are exposed to things that 20 years ago were unheard of. As time creeps on we see more and more things that challenge belief. In film and on television, extremely violent imagery is such an accepted and major part of entertainment that some cannot enjoy a film or program unless it is violent.

In what passes for music, the lyrics are more explicit and sexually laden than they ever were. A great deal of the video clips that appear on television would be considered pornography once upon a time. Other forms of music such as some rap have lyrics about killing people, guns and putting down women in the worst possible way.

Something that would be laughed off as impossible years ago, children before they can even walk properly are now exposed to adult entertainers such as drag queens as part of some supposed education or enlightenment program. Some of these drag queens have names of male and female genitalia. Some have names that relate to sexual scents and arousal. Some even have gone as far as doing stripping routines, twerking, teaching twerking, and  other blatant sexually suggestive behaviour. They are even reading childrens stories that are an alternative to the male and female relationships or the birth genders..

Children are playing violent video games which are much more graphic and interactive than what they were in the past. Many are not interested in a video game unless it is violent. They can play for hours and hours on these games, either connected to their own source or a source that is online. Some of the games are so violent that some adults are sickened to the degree that they refuse to even talk about it. Others that do find it almost impossible to comprehend.

* Where should the boundaries be set or where should they have been set?

* What effect is this having on children today?

* How will things be in ten or twenty years time?

Sorry to bang on, but I just remembered something.......

Back in the day [waaay back] when I was in high school, a required book to read was Lord of the Flies.

Any one read that ? IMO a horror story in it's own right.

Spoiler
Yes I am ducking my, head waiting........

Positively revolting book.  Hated it!

For those who say that only the children that play these violent games, listen to violent music, are exposed to adult sexual content are affected have no idea about a flow on effect. Kids learn off of from others and then there's the "peer thing" where others have to do and say things to fit in. I have to say that I have massive respect for parents that home school their kids.

Seems no idea - of parenting.

It was a horrifying book... In my view, it was horrifying in a good way. It provoked thought; it made me consider the meaning of civilisation and to what extent the human soul can or will become cruel. I wondered what made one boy rise to honour and what made another throw away precepts of honour, and why some boys would quell their inner voice and merely follow the path of least resistance.

How many of you have seen the Polanski film version of Macbeth? After watching it, we came back to school for the next lesson - biology. As luck would have it, we were to dissect rats that day. Who could have predicted that a handful of the cheekier boys in the class would decapitate their rat and place it on a stick, carrying it around through the classroom while chanting, "Behold, where stands the usurper's cursed head"...?

Sexualised behaviour in very young children increasing, say teachers

Sex and relationship education currently inadequate in context of sexual material freely available online, which may be leading to rise in sexual assaults

There is a “slow creep” of sexualised language and behaviour among children as young as five in the classroom, teachers have told the Guardian.

Primary and secondary school teachers described the level of sex and relationship education (SRE) available to children as inadequate in response to a call out via the Guardian’s online Teachers Network.

Their evidence, although anecdotal, gives a troubling glimpse into classrooms where teachers are trying but failing to tackle sexual bullying, harassment and other sexual violence experienced by pupils.

MUSIC LYRICS

Music lyrics have undergone dramatic changes since the introduction of rock music more than 40 years ago. This is an issue of vital interest and concern for parents and pediatricians.

During the past four decades, rock music lyrics have become increasingly explicit-particularly with reference to sex, drugs, and violence. [1,2] Recently, heavy metal and "gangsta rap" music lyrics have elicited the greatest concern. In some cases lyrics communicate potentially harmful health messages. [3] Such lyrics are of special concern in today’s environment, which poses unprecedented threats to the health and well-being of adolescents. Pregnancy, drug use, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (and other sexually transmitted diseases), injuries, homicide, and suicide have all become part of the landscape of everyday life for many American teens. I actually agree with the music side of things, some of the lyrics and the bands are stomach churning, and it IS NOT freaking music.

In addition this is a very HARD thing to regulate - as a parent how do you stop a kid listening, watching, whatever.

You Tube is there for all, and is actually a site that many kid's access to learn various things for school, uni and the like, so yeah, a huge wide open door.
