Public Housing should be STOPPED & SOLD

The government buys houses and rents them out to people at a discounted rate and the tax payer has to carry this burden.

Why is this so?   Governments should not be buying houses!

I'm sorry but we should not have government housing!

Complete waste money!

All government housing should be sold to private sector!

The millions of dollars raised from the sale will build better roads, freeways, hospitals.

Governments should govern NOT buy houses for people to live in!

The job of government is to govern not babysit people!

***** Dear State Governments **** Please SELL ALL GOVERNMENT HOUSES !!! ****

if the govt. went after those large corporate tax evaders,( as they iniitially said they would )instead of trying to squeeze dollars from the poor, that surely would make a difference to our debt,

Re: Public Housing should be STOPPED & SOLD

Under this new system of yours UFO, is there going to be any controls on rents private providers are allowed to charge? How are you going to stop landlords upping rents again and agin until the "gap" between what the tenants have to pay and the assistance they get becomes impossible to manage (think Medicare "gaps"). Where will they go then?

I'm thinking that the OP's worst nightmare would be to have neighbours in a publicly-funded house that are welfare-dependent and Muslim.

Re: Public Housing should be STOPPED & SOLD

In S.A those in public housingbwho are on Newstart don't qualify for rent assistance because the rent they pay is about $80 per week. However,if they are fortunate enough to get a full time job, they are required to pay full rent. If they get a part time job and are still eligible for some money from Centrelink, their rent is raised according to their total income.

Re: Public Housing should be STOPPED & SOLD

Re the bedroom tax. This is a policy adopted from the Coalition government in Britain.

If person is struggling to make ends meet, $20/30 a week is an extra cost they can't afford so will move, no choice really. . I don't know if there are any figures released to show how many have moved to smaller houses since they borought this tax in.

Shortage of public housing is big problem, and public house numbers are declining in some states.

Edited to add:
"Since the charge’s introduction, the Department of Family and Community Services has already spoken to more than 2000 households statewide.
Of these, 921 had agreed to move to a smaller house while 1251 said they would prefer to pay the extra rent, a department spokesman said."

NSW
If a household is eligible for a rent subsidy, the tenant will pay between 25% and 30% of their household income as rent. However, Housing NSW will assess the income of some people at a reduced percentage rate, called concessional rates (15-24%)

$5 minimum rent if tenant is in respite care in nursing home, rehab, refuge and has to pay for those. $5 p.w. person is in custody.

Re: Public Housing should be STOPPED & SOLD

As far as UFO is concerned, there should be NO public housing whatsoever. Everyone will have to pay rent to a private owner landlord.

So how much subsidy will the Government be able to afford on weekly rents of $450.- or more?
