The government buys houses and rents them out to people at a discounted rate and the tax payer has to carry this burden.
Why is this so? Governments should not be buying houses!
I'm sorry but we should not have government housing!
Complete waste money!
All government housing should be sold to private sector!
The millions of dollars raised from the sale will build better roads, freeways, hospitals.
Governments should govern NOT buy houses for people to live in!
The job of government is to govern not babysit people!
***** Dear State Governments **** Please SELL ALL GOVERNMENT HOUSES !!! ****

$250 rent assistance would provide a 1 brm bedsit at best. Where I live that would get you a brm in someone else's house.
There are families that need accommodating, as well as single people, couples ..
People on the dole only receive $250approx a week in benefits.
Yes that is why they would go to centrelink and make application for assistance. The clerk would then assess the situation of the family and adjust the rental assistance. This is better than buying a $620,000 townhouse!

i say i hope the state govs manage the housing needs a lot better, there's quite a few vacant properties 'for years' owned by the state, heard it on the news in sydney somewhere, while people are still waiting inline

The State Govt is required by law to provide public housing. I can't see those laws being abolished anytime soon.. so I don't know why you are so concerned.
Australia is not the only country that has public housing.
There is also community housing in Australia for low income people.
If the State Govts aren't maintaining the houses as they should, then maintenance costs are going to blow out if they leave it too long to do repairs.

The sooner public housing is abolished the sooner Australia will be debt free.

OK.
I disagree with that view.
What action are you going to take to get the law changed?

never heard anyone in 'RL' say state housing should be abolished
never mind the national debt that will never be paid off, imagine the chaos! rent and property values would sky rocket worse then what it already is, the crime! all those homeless people, woe

Rent assistance of $250.- per fortnight? Not per week.
Many people would be happy to receive that much on Rent assistance.
Get your facts right and then talk.

Google Centerlink Rent assistance and inform yourself. AU$120.- per fortnight would add nothing to $420.- per week rent.
BTW, I don't receive Rent assistance. I live in a Retirement Village.
