Seems the suits at QANTAS are going to retrench 6000 odd workers - i hope there is an effective assistance package
This of course implies that QANTAS is reducing flight-travel-routes - I am sure Virgin II will take up any slack....

People not so enthusiastic ? The cost , maybe ? or do we rather prefer to drive ? and so have the freedom of private transport usage at the distination ? maybe ?
Solution to encourage passenger uptake ?
Well maybe in order to enable plane users to enjoy the freedom of car vehicle transport the airlines could create / buy or negociate with car hire companies to enable low cost car hire at the flight destination - to appeal to even struggle class
Need not be the latest merc
Once the teeming masses catch on to truly affordable flights and car rental there maybe a huge resergance in regional/interstate travel and touring - may even compensate for the loss of international flights as overhead costs will be so much less
Demand may justify many new routes - and so access to more interesting and entertaining destinations
Well, Qantas employ many people to run their A380s. And those aircraft are parked. And no number of domestic flights are likely to approach pre-COVID levels for quite some time, if ever. So, domestic flights are down, and will remain so, international flights are on hold for the duration.
Tourists aren't likely to even cover the traffic that Sydney-Melbourne and Sydney-Brisbane did when the vast majority of those flights were full of full-fare paying customers.
Bums on seats doesn't necessarily equate to profit.
Having said that, I suspect Qantas will run flights that at least break even. Alan Joyce seems to be a reasonable man and he has a government looking over his shoulder.

QANTAS can lease regional jets , they can diversify into car rental market for use by passengers, , so demand can be encouraged (if they get off their high horse) - There is little lack of spare money and time for most who would normally visit overseas and with RDO's etc many could take time off to tour nationally ( maybe companies could offer staff on a roster basis accrued leave days to enable touring in support of regional small business)
Australia might surprise itself
However many people may have got used to the home environment and busied themselves with new found interests, projects and hobbies - so not inclined to tour

It's a bit difficult to drive to Tasmania and New Zealand.
Besides I doubt NZ is going to even consider cross Tasman travel until we get this current upsurge in infections under control.
