Quadriplegic berated for parking in handicapped bay

A quadriplegic has found an anonymous note on his BMW because he parked in a handicapped bay.

London's Daily Mail reports that Matt Milstead parked in had parked in the spot before going to play a game of wheelchair rugby at the YMCA in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

When the 36-year-old returned to his car, he found the nasty handwritten note in the door handle.

"I would love to see your wheelchair! I'm guessing male 25-35 years professional who thinks he's got the world by the ass. But I could be wrong," the note said.

Mr Milstead, who works for the Social Security Administration, said he was shocked by the note.

"I was kind of puzzled why he would leave this note and never met me, didn't know if I was in a wheelchair or not, but he just assumed I was just someone who tried to steal a close and convenient spot," he told Wood TV 8.

His wife Leslie was furious and vented on Facebook.

"It's kind of ironic the guy was trying to right a wrong. He assumed some jerk had parked in a handicapped spot that shouldn't be, and so he was really trying," Mrs Milstead said. "He probably felt like a good person and thought he was doing a good thing, but the problem is he was wrong."

On Facebook she wrote: "He is a quadriplegic, which for him means that he can no longer move his legs or his fingers in either hand. He has no grip. So, if you are willing to give him your functioning hands and legs for the rest of your life in exchange for his 6-year-old BMW and handicapped parking pass, I'm sure he'd make that trade."

Some people are ery quick to assume before they know the facts.

When I came out of hospital after major hip surgery I had a disable parking sticker for 6 months.  One day the OH drove me to the shopping centre and parked in the Disable Space.  He went back to the car with the shopping while I did some more shopping when I came out on my crutches this man had abused the OH and then went and got the Parking Inspector at this time I arrived and the Parking Inspector asked if it was my sticker I said yes and he apologised to the OH.  The man that started it just walked off without saying a word to either of us.

But of-course, there are people who park in disabled bays when they are not disabled.  I just wonder if the guy in the OP did not have his permit   showing, in which case why is he surprised?

I think that people who do not have a permit and park in the disabled bays are the lowest selfish bleeps.

Doesn't say in the story whether he has his permit up or not.

If he didn't, what do yo expect. At least someone had the balls to tell him/her off.

A BMW car with no permit. What would you think?

I take it from the story that he would have had the permit displayed and the issue was more he had a BMW? There are some fools out there that have it in their head that the disabled can't have a successful life.

I think.... it is not my business to even check. My day is very full, too full to be worrying about who parks where.......unless you need assistance, don't expect me to check?

My FIL had a temporary disabled sticker after an operation on his ankles. My BIL drove him to the shops (as FIL was unable to drive) and put the sticker on his car. As BIL got out of the car a man came up to him and verbally abused him for taking up a disabled park as he obviously wasn't disabled etc. FIL  then hobbled out of the car and when the man saw him he realised he was totally wrong in his judgement.

We had a similar case when my son fell from a factory roof. I pulled up at the bank, parking in the disabled spot as I had a sticker on the car due to his injuries. 2 police officers walking past stopped and looked at me get out, started to walk towards the car and I'm sure they were about to question me. I took the wheelchair from the boot and they walked off.
