If this is true we really need to wonder if he is a fit and proper person to be our elected leader

Thats now 36 years ago.

Mr Abbott said the case, details of which are included in a book to be released next month, took place in January 1978.

The magistrate complained of "enormous conflict" between the prosecution and defence evidence, and dismissed the case.

The alleged assault was a "put-up job" staged by political opponents, he said, "to be embarrassing - and it was embarrassing".

Well that's the first time I've heard Michelle Grattan called anything from the left.  :D:D

It's a well known story.  Is that the case where they hired a QC to get him off?

He's unfit, but not because of his past.

Perhaps someone with a little more class, this sort of thing is something I would expect for drunken football players not a an aspiring future leader.

If this is the best  we can get from local stock then it explains an awful lot and is very telling where we are heading when people like that manage to secure the top job
