Ebay have removed listings, worldwide, in the last couple of days
for Golliwog/Golly citing the 'hateful or discriminatory policy.'
Aunt Jemima dolls (mammy dolls) have also gone
The weird part is, there was a sub-category in Dolls/Bears for Golliwogs
All things Golliwog have disappeared.
Books including ones by Enid Blyton have gone.
It's ok to sell them, just don't put golliwog/golly in the title.
I have been informed that I need to be educated on the matter,
and have been given links to things like the Jim Crow Museum
http://www.ferris.edu/HTMLS/news/jimcrow/golliwog/
My own opinion is, I love gollies. I can see no relevance to them in Australia.
I think they are/were a much loved toy with no underlying racial tones.
A lot of people may be upset by the images, but I think Ebay has just made
them worth a lot more money on other sites.
I'm not looking for an argument, and you won't get one.
I would just like some more opinions.
It started on the Selling Boards
http://community.ebay.com.au/t5/Selling/Item-specific-Listing-Removed-Sick-Of-It/td-p/1834945
I would hope that opinions do not run too hot, and turn into arguments.
Solved! Go to Solution.

the best thing of all? ok
but
most of my posts are referring to the
topic though.
questioning the wiki quote on the other hand
was completely unnecessary (and irrelevant)
as it is easy enough to verify it.

No it wasn't unneccesary at all - it was calling you on copying text from an unreliable source, that was not cited, and that you noted in your post was FACT [sic]
it was amusing for me (slightly) ... but quite misleading .. as Wiki excerpts are by no means reliable FACT .. *giggles*

*giggles*!! Are you freakin' kidding me? Your lolcats don't fool anyone

oh but i did check if the statement
was correct. i would not have posted it
otherwise. it is easy to verify if wiki content
comes from a reliable source.
so which part of the information i posted from
wiki was misleading?

Golly gosh!!!
And my exclamation has nothing to do with a doll.
As God-fearing people we had been taught never to take Gods name in vain. So instead of saying "GOOD GOD!" it became "Golly Gosh!"
Translate Golly to Good. Has nothing to do with coloured people.
Now, tell me it is racist to say those words.

Yes, gosh and golly, originated as euphemisms for god and their use in this context predates the invention of the golli.
I can see that the labelling of Robertsons jams used both a image of a golli as well as including the euphemism in its branding.
Aside from that, not sure how this euphemism and its use instead of "God" and the racial sterotyping nature of golli products can be linked. Others might know more or have some ideas.
