Ebay have removed listings, worldwide, in the last couple of days
for Golliwog/Golly citing the 'hateful or discriminatory policy.'
Aunt Jemima dolls (mammy dolls) have also gone
The weird part is, there was a sub-category in Dolls/Bears for Golliwogs
All things Golliwog have disappeared.
Books including ones by Enid Blyton have gone.
It's ok to sell them, just don't put golliwog/golly in the title.
I have been informed that I need to be educated on the matter,
and have been given links to things like the Jim Crow Museum
http://www.ferris.edu/HTMLS/news/jimcrow/golliwog/
My own opinion is, I love gollies. I can see no relevance to them in Australia.
I think they are/were a much loved toy with no underlying racial tones.
A lot of people may be upset by the images, but I think Ebay has just made
them worth a lot more money on other sites.
I'm not looking for an argument, and you won't get one.
I would just like some more opinions.
It started on the Selling Boards

I would hope that opinions do not run too hot, and turn into arguments.

And yet, in my B & M store I sold all my Brownie Downings and
Peg Maltby's to Aboriginal people. Men and women.
They were the biggest collectors at that time
I think it might be the dot paintings that they object to whites painting

One of the most memorable characters in Gone With the Wind was a domestic slave.....Scarlet's Mammy played by Hattie McDaniel.
And Prissy played by Butterfly McQueen....and Big Sam played by Everett Brown.
Have you never seen the original 1939 version of Gone With the Wind....the whole movie is about the life of people who had domestic slaves.

But the objection with golly and mammy dolls is their background
of minstrel blackface and domestic slavery.
I had no knowledge of that when I was four, and I doubt it would have meant
anything to me either.
Perhaps not ima. But think about how the golliwogs/black characters were always potrayed by Enid Blyton - dirty, nasty, thieving, naughty. Whether you recall knowledge or not, the subconcious retains informaion like this.
the brownies were often naughty and badly behaved, ameia jane was a naughty bad mannered doll, binkle and flip were naughty bunnies and often in trouble, the naughtiest gir in school was always playing up....
I doubt that she had any racial motivation when writing her golliwog books, and just for the record the golly in the amelia jane books was always polite and kind if I remember correctly..

They were not slaves, as far as I know. They were employees.

they were slaves in the beginning - the whole story was about the civil war ending savery and the south losing their way of life...

Written from the perspective of the slaveholder, Gone with the Wind is Southern plantation fiction. Its portrayal of slavery and African Americans is controversial, as well as its use of a racial epithet and ethnic slurs.

The word from Ebay -
We thank you for your understanding and ask you to please not list these kinds of items.
Books, artwork and music are part of the exemption, however sellers cannot use the term Golliwog/Golly in the listing unless that term is included in the actual title of the media. Please make the necessary revision when you list your item.
If you are able to see sellers selling the same items, provide us the item numbers so that necessary action will be taken.
Thank you for choosing eBay.
