Just for the records, Germany provides food, health care, financial support, education, housing and does NOT lock up people on remote islands. Italy with a significant refugee issue declares a day of national mourning when a boat capsizes on the Mediterranean and people drown.

As you say Nero Wulf this is Australia  ...our Country is signed up to the Refugee Convention

People can seek Asylum by boat or by sea ...with or without papers 

If we were landlocked by another country they could do so by walking or driving in 

The act of allowing people to ask for Asylum is part of our/this (sorry I don't know if you are Australian and/or live in Australia)

What I don't understand is the level of animosity towards asylum seekers. Murderers, paedophiles, etc, I can understand the hatred but not when its aimed at people who need help.

Not really sure how you can twist statistics.  It is true that only a small number of countries participate in the refugee resettlement program with Australia being third largest per capita.  Not sure why this fact is never highlighted when providing statistics.

There has been a wave of protests against Germany's asylum policy in the past week - and they are becoming more radical. Around 30 asylum seekers in Berlin have gone on hunger strike.

In Germany, asylum seekers are put in communal housing, have only limited rights to travel within the country and are not given work permits. "Some of us have been waiting for two or three years for asylum applications to be acknowledged," says Akili. "Refusing food is the only path we have left."

exactly, I find this so hard to understand, the numbers are so small, why???? is it the whole "no one gives me anything for free" thing?

First you make a law that makes them "illegal"  = they then become law breakers - who breaks the law? Criminals.

then you hint that they could even be "terrorists" = even worse criminals.

then you give people the idea that these criminals are queue jumpers (and who doesn't get annoyed by queue jumpers), that they have done something that just isn't fair to the "other non-criminals" that are patiently waiting in these non-existent queues.

then you convince people that actually we are very very over populated and running out of rescources (or is that recourses) so really we only have enough in the cupboard to feed ourselves

Then you sit back and watch and enjoy.
