We could at the bottom of the OP add a line like that
"General chat welcome, please feel free to discuss OT here as well"
it would make it impossible to be OT in a thread and the harassment by the mods might recede a bit.
to the mods:
mod·er·ate (md
r-
t)adj.
Solved! Go to Solution.
on 26-09-2013 12:23 PM
You forgot to add the line.
Seriously, I don't think it is the mods fault. They have to act on reports and if the reporter is right then they have to remove the post I suppose.

so if something that is perfectly fine by the rules should be removed because there is a bunch of bleeps who want it removed?

What a lot of angst over something so essentially trivial - get up someone's nose, they report you, you get a slap, who cares? At least you have the satisfaction of knowing you've hit your target.
Provided you are a bit subtle and choose your words carefully, you can actually get away with a lot more now than you could under LiveWorld. At least the Lithium mods do read the posts and make informed judgements. I have no way of knowing of course but I rather suspect I've been the object of quite a few reports lately that haven't been upheld.

before the advent of lithium was imposed upon us, these boards 'ad placeholders to show when a post 'ad been taken down. now, to my thinkin' lithium would 'ave that same ability written someplace into their programmin'
if a removed post is unjustifiably removed, and it's proven beyond a shadow of doubt to be unjustiably removed - like, say, unreasonably removed, for off-topic, the flamin' post should be flamin' well put back .

also, i'll add, these removals and edits, all seemingly cumulatively accrue. for every notice received, the sooner one may be shot off to the frigid wastes of siberia, for a progressively longer and longer sojourn. hotel vladivostock 'as a permanent bookin, in my name.

the whole off topic thing is imo trivial .As this is a designated 'general discussion' board off topic imo should only apply to posts which belong on other boards (ebay related boards ..ie; those who's topics are buying/selling/moderation ).If 'off topic' is used to control general discussion in a community ...it is not really general discussion and not open to every members unique input (as per Community Values).
TGSE , getting up someone's nose or wanting to would fit more into interpersonal dispute category wouldn't it ..than it does off topic ?
I have no real wish to get up someone's nose...I would like to be able to take part in a general discussion and not have my posts removed (and/or have them put back) if my posts don't violate policies.
ps..I agree with your 2nd paragraph
on 26-09-2013 03:23 PM
Be nasty, mean, swear using bleep / xxxx, but do not post good morning followed by a comment because the good morning is off topic! *sigh*

I can sympathise with some of the moderators of this forum. Having been in the same role on other sites may I add that the task is a thankless one.
To sort the chaff from straw is challenging.
In my personal opinion it is better to allow disagreement without removal unless it turns into a personal attack on one or the other posters character.
Profanity is easily filtered out by available filters, offensive images are more of a challenge. The constant reporting by some are a problem and that too can be overcome by having a database of the serial reporters and the people they target.
I can visualise the reported post panel ablaze when certain posters get reported en masse by the groups of reporters who have taken a dislike to the poster.
Some posters are controversial and that is how a diverse, vibrant forum should be. Controversy is essential to vigorous debate and discussion, from that flows a dissemination of ideas and views from many sources adding to modifying the views of all...........hopefully.
So spare a thought for the poor overworked and stressed out mod 🙂

I must have been naru when they had venetian blinds, stuck on the outside looking in.
For me the current moderation is far superior, the old could read all sorts of things into a post with the single word 'Hi'.
Looking back at the slaps that flew around in every direction, I sometimes wonder if there were a third party of lurkers getting their jollies pressing the report button and watching us blame one another.
Poddy, if nothing else, your forum gave us 'playful percy'.

The discussion board usage policy found here: http://pages.ebay.com.au/help/policies/everyone-boards.html very clearly states under "some examples" :
"The following types of postings are cause for immediate post removal, warning, board sanction and/or suspension from the site. Other inappropriate postings not listed below may also warrant removal and/or suspension from the site. eBay reserves the right to remove any post without warning or further notice.
Posts that do not relate to the discussion board’s topic(s)."
It does not say ANYWHERE that posts must adhere to the topic of the THREAD.
This is an off topic eBay discussion board. Having posts removed for being off topic in a THREAD is not mentioned ANYWHERE in the discussion board usage policy.
The TOPIC of the Community Spirit discussion board very clearly states:
Obviously, the Discussion Board Usage Policy is being very loosely interpreted when it comes to "off topic" topics.
If being off topic in a thread on this board is not permitted it would be nice if the Discussion Board Usage Policy reflected that and actually stated that.
The last time the discussion Board Usage Policy was updated was April 2009, so I won't hold my breath...
Finally, the Discussion Board Usage Policy states: "Other inappropriate postings not listed below may also warrant removal and/or suspension from the site. eBay reserves the right to remove any post without warning or further notice." So basically, they can remove any post and/or suspend you from the site for any reason at all.

yes. i like green. if you don't like green don't enter my threads
i wish it was easier to paint them like you could chose your thread colour when you make it.
it's a real hassle to paint every single post seperately.

You forgot to add the line.
Seriously, I don't think it is the mods fault. They have to act on reports and if the reporter is right then they have to remove the post I suppose.

LOL i did forget.
so if something that is perfectly fine by the rules should be removed because there is a bunch of bleeps who want it removed?
