Religion of Peace and Polygamy

Question:

Does Islam really allow a man to take up to four wives?

Summary Answer:

Yes, a Muslim man can marry as many as four women, and have sexual relations with an unspecified number of slaves as well.  Muhammad had eleven wives at one time.

The Quran:

Quran (4:3) - "Marry of the women, who seem good to you, two or three or four; and if ye fear that ye cannot do justice (to so many) then one (only) or (the captives) that your right hands possess."  This verse clearly allows a man to have up to four wives (Allah conveniently granted Muhammad an exception... according to what Muhammad told his followers).  According to the Hadith, the "justice" spoken of merely refers to the dowry provided the bride, not the treatment accorded following the wedding.

Quran (4:129) - "Ye are never able to be fair and just as between women, even if it is your ardent desire"  Underscores that a man is not able to treat multiple wives fairly.  He would therefore be unable to acquire more than one wife if this were a requirement - which it is not.  In fact, Muhammad was not able to treat his own wives fairly (see Additional Notes).

Quran (66:5) - "Maybe, his Lord, if he divorce you, will give him in your place wives better than you, submissive, faithful, obedient, penitent, adorers, fasters, widows and virgins"  A disobedient wife can be replaced.  A man can only have up to four wives, but he can rotate as many women as he pleases in and out of the lineup.

I wonder what women in the 21st century think about this?

Makes no difference if they accept it or not, the law will not recognise them as husband and wife, as for the other comment re Centrelink, depending on the man's income (or combined income) and the structure of the family/household, most families are entitled to benefits of some kind.

Islam  may allow it but Australian law only allows 1 legal wife and no slaves.

If they take other wives, they are not legally married to them but the man must support them.

Some men of all Religions take mistresses.....................................

Allah granted Mahammed an exception where he was allowed 11 wives but in the 7th century there was no viagra. How did this man satisfy each wife? Did he have a different one each night? or did he have all of them at once? I can't see how this would cause peace between the wives. I know most women today would not allow their husband to even look at another woman let alone having 11 wives.

I have no way of knowing that...........I was born this century but in some cultures, men do take over the responsibilty of widowed family members, perhaps they don't necessarily need to satisfy them?

Re: Religion of Peace and Polygamy

There are people in Australia who have open relationships and even open marriages. In Australia this is not illegal no matter how many people they have regular relations with. It is one legal wife/husband but as many willing partners as you like.

And Perth is in Australia right?

No to be serious, and what is required to convict a man of rape is the most ridiculous thing I've seen in a long time.  What is it they have to have four or five witnesses?  Is that in the Koran too?  I know it is practiced in so many countries.

In Islam a woman needs 4 witnesses whereas a man only needs 2. The womans testimony is only worth 1/2 of a mans.

It might be easier to say that in some countries a woman's worth is half that as a man's because nearly all religions place women as subservient to man even early Buddhist text.

Re: Religion of Peace and Polygamy

In Islam a man can simply divorce his wife by saying "I divorce you"  x 3 times.

Once he says that, they are legally divorced. BUT a woman can't divorce her husband.

If the man changes his mind and wants to remarry her, he can't until she marries another man and that man divorces her. Only then can the original husband remarry her.

Re: Religion of Peace and Polygamy

In Australia, a Muslim man can only divorce his wife legally, his wife can also do the same. The Catholic Church doesn't recognise divorce  (in most cases) but the law is quite clear on that point.

Re: Religion of Peace and Polygamy

and as for rape, no one in Australia needs 4 witnesses. We have progressed to having things like courts of law................ and DNA.
