Restaurant queues. Is it a Melbourne thing?

Just got back from a couple of days in Melbourne for business and was taken to a couple of restaurants at night and some places for brekky. Both times the queues were ridiculous.

Whilst I see this phenomenom creaping into the Sydney 'cool' no-booking type restaurant scene, most Sydneysiders would just keep walking (to the next restaurant) if they saw a queue.

We had a 2 hour weight for a seat at ChinChin and then a one hour wait fro brekky at Hardware Society. Our Melbourne hosts thought it acceptable and seeing as I was pitching for a job I could exactly say "stuff this!".

Would you wait 2 hours for a meal?

Not a hope I could go buy fresh food take it home and cook it myself in less time.

Not to mention I get snarkie at Hungy Jacks when it takes 10 minutes to get served, I often ask how they can posibly call it fast food when it takes so long

WA born and raised, so yeah, Ive heard the phrase once or twice.

Im just used to WA being so laid back that its a foreign concept to me that we appear to be happy with this pretentious cr ap all of a sudden.

No I wouldn't wait those times, Lis said it all. I would move on to the next place where I wouldn't have to wait.

WA ,wait awhile, we've heard that too many times, people need to think up something else, something to be said for being a bit laid back.

What amazes me is that places can die or thrive overnight according to trends.

No, I wouldn't wait 2 hours - not when there are loads of other choices.

Bondi has more icecream shops than you can poke a stick at and when a new one opens all the others appear empty.

We went down the beach last night and Messina has queues a mile long and all the others were practically empty (all equally as good) With an average rent of about $5,000 per week I would hate to be in the food business.

Messina gelato/ice cream is VERY good donna. Prices are reasonable too. The Surry Hills one has queues, but they move fairly fast

I woukd wait up to an hour if I really wanted to go to a particular eating place. If they tell you the wait is long and put your name down you can go do something else while you wait.

I would prefer a booking though, so no waiting.

in the US they had the buzzer remote things they give you and you can wander around nearby the restarauant while waiting.

Restaurants with no queues may have not so good food on offer.

I work around the corner from Messinas and even now, in winter, people are queueing to get ice-cream. Our office used to buy ice-cream every other day but we gave up in summer. Sometimes there could be a 100 person queue snaking all the way down the street.

Ridiculous.
