A group of young priests in Italy have thrown tradition to the wind and posed for a calendar that reportedly aims to inform people about the Vatican.
The 12-page document contains black and white images of smiling seminarians in various locations in Rome as well as a few pages of information about the Catholic church.
Photographer Piero Pazzi, who put together the calendar, said the men are all real priests and none had been paid for their modelling.
"I meet most of them on the streets in Rome and ask to take their photos," he said.
"Most are happy to be photographed after I tell them the reason for the calendar."
"Yes, the men are good-looking, but it is just a product, a way for people to be better informed about the Vatican".
Mr Pazzi, who launched the calendar in 2003, said priests from all over the world are welcome to take part in the calendar but add they will need to travel to Rome to be photographed.

Is nothing sacred anymore? I'm not a practising Christian and certainly not Catholic, but this is not becoming for the Church IMO!
This is surely the work of the devil!
Mr Pazzi! Is that a nom de plume of Lucifer?
Short for papparazzi?
So which one do you like best?

I don't find it amusing.
I don't understand the concept of disbelieving another persons commitment unless you have intimate knowledge of them. I certainly can't be 100% certain of course but I tend to believe it is more likely they are upholding their vows than not.
Celibacy is a prerequisite for ordination. (since 1075 and Pope Gregory VII)
Recent times, we have seen married and previously married clergy, who are converts.

choosing to live in celibacy is not a new concept for ordained buddhist nuns, monks or catholic nuns and priests. it is also practiced in hinduism. celibacy has secular origin. i really dont understand why people find the concept funny
I find it funny, because it rarely happens, and therefore hypocricy looms large in everything that is said.
Sadly, the whistleblower priest who revealed this was killed in the recent storm in the Philippines. Perhaps he has written something about it.
Real celibacy means no bleep behaviour at all, even when there is no other person present. Doesn't happen.
But, if some people believe it occurs, good for them, but it won't diminish my amusement.
Oh, fair enough then.
wise words from Dalai Lama: "...... sex offers fleeting satisfaction but leads to trouble and tribulation, while celibacy offers a better life and "more independence, more freedom..."
actually an interesting, well balanced article: http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/evil-deeds/201207/sex-celibacy-and-spirituality-why-the-dalai-la...

Wanna bet? Seems to me that when you're happy to be photographed for "Rome's "Hot Priests" Calender", you're at least aware that you're going to be appealing to someone (of either gender if truth be told!).
Cheers,
Marina.
Its not actually titled "Rome's Hot Priests Calendar" LOL
It is a Calendar that contains information about the Vatican. Naturally, from a marketing perspective, it makes sense to use good looking people. The campaign has worked very well. Everyone is talking about it. (the priests do not get paid to appear it the Calendar)

Perhaps he was better looking when younger?

How'd you like to meet this guy in a darkened confessional?
Scary, huh?
Somehow I don't think he's calendar material, do you?
If all priests looked like this, I bet attendances would plummet.

My understanding is that celibacy as a requirement for Catholic priests is relatively recent (600 years- ish) and was mainly introduced to enhance and protect the wealth of the church. My own father-in-law was left all of hi parents' property and money because both of his sisters are nuns, and if they inherited anything, they were obliged to hand it over to the church.
I'm not church-bashing (I believe and attend, and have a few persons of the cloth of both genders amongst family and friends) but there are an awful lot of church rules and regulations that have nothing to do with faith. Religion and faith are 2 very separate things.
Here endeth the rant,
Marina.

Didn't know that - took it all on face value without any research, but I'm really more interested in the discussion re "Hot Priests", and the reactions it all seems to have triggered.
Maybe if we all weren't so precious about our "Holy men",and their place in our community, we wouldn't have such serious problems in respect of abuse towards adults and children.
