what ive found is LED lighting is so much better than the old fluro tubes and modern filters are much easier to clean and pump a lot more water through them.

when i last kept fish, prolly 15 to 20 years ago i was constantly replacing fluro tubes and cleaning the filters.

oh and ebay is fantastic for buying pretty much anything other than the tank, fish and gravel.

I used to keep tropical fish.  Love clown loaches and corydoras.  I had three tanks (3ft and 2ft for tripicals, and a 2ft for an axolotl) and for a while they were great fun.  Unfortunately in the end arthritic knees and shoulders put paid to lugging buckets of water about.

One of the Burmese used to sit on the glass atop the 3ft tank and stare at the fish.  She never attempted to catch them but her tail drifted slightly into the tank once and the fish immediately attacked thinking it was food.  I don't know if it was the fish or the fact that her tail got wet but she never sat there again.

i have a pipe from the big tank to the kitchen sink rigged so i can siphon water out, i just suck a bit on the end to start it.

then i run a hose from the laundy where the washing machine connects out to the tank to refill.

i mix one bucket while its draining with the various additives required and tip it in when its refilling.

the little tank is just 2 buckets out 2 buckets in plus a bit for evaporation.

rosie sits on a chair watching often

My tanks were too far away from a water source (and sink to drain it way).  I used to use a 'jiggle' syphon - a length of plastic tubing with a brass valve type thingy at one end.  I bought it at an expo of Oz made products, and it worked liked a charm.

The water buckets themselves were the problem....so heavy when you're not so steady on your feet.  One of them is still filled with expensive aquarium gravel saved from the large tank.  I last used some to weigh down a pot and plant with it so it wouldn't easily tip over outdoors.  It's beautiful gravel, not grey but a rich dark reddish brown.

Cats are weird.

After years of owning cats who might be fussy about food at times but were always looking for a piece of whatever I might be eating, my current cat loves her cat food.....and won't eat human food. She isn't even keen on raw chicken wings, and as for cooked or prepared cat food she likes fish, chicken and lamb but isn't so keen on beef or salmon. She is also a 'grazer' eating her meal in small portions over the day.

I have to say, it's lovely to sit down with a meal....and be left in peace to eat it. ๐Ÿ™‚
