I'm not very happy with some news I heard on the radio and then on the tv.  Some years ago when my boys were in early primary school they took part in a project to sign their names to be included in tiles around the bell tower.  It was supposed to be a part of history.

I remember visiting the bell tower on Australia Day one year and finding their names.  Well guess what?  All the tiles have been ripped up without any consultation.  

Where are all the school names in the tower?

Sign In 2000 was part of the largest community project of this type ever undertaken in WA. School students from all around WA were invited to take part in Sign In 2000, offering them the opportunity to sign their names into history.
The tiles from the Sign In 2000 project are currently being removed as part of the Elizabeth Quay development. The Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority has created a photographic record of each tile to obtain the signature in electronic format for future interpretation into the public realm at Elizabeth Quay.

So woop de doo.  They have taken photos of them.  Does Perth have any history still standing?  Any beautiful old buildings here are just bulldozed.

Aww that's a shame Joono I would be upset too.

In my suburb all the old houses are being pulled down for apartments. It reminds me of the 70's when they pulled down so many lovely old buildings for ugly square box flats

Joono, perhaps that last sentence means they're going to incorporate the tiles into the new development? I hope so, otherwise it sounds like typical rich people's disrespect.

I hope they do Karen.  I just don't understand how it can be done so quietly.  There was a woman on the news tonight that was quite upset about it because her son's signature was there but he died a while later.  I'm sure there are many parents that feel equally upset when they have lost their children since.  What kind of history was that?  14 years?

It's terrible, Joono...and it's obvious they knew they were doing the wrong thing, otherwise they'd have consulted with the community. I hope they use the tiles in a prominent place in the new development.

When history is purposely and purposefully recorded, to then dismantle it and take a freakin' photo of it? 

What will be left for our grandchildren and future generations? Photos of stuff on the Internet? 

"Ohyeahbut, we did destroy it, but we took a digital pic.and put it on the 'net."

I couldn't agree more.  

Karen, the tiles have been destroyed.  I was hoping that the digital copy could be used somehow but if it's just a photo that can be looked up when you enter a complex after a fee of $20 to see whatever else they are building then why bother.

I don't know Karen.  I haven't heard yet who gave it the go ahead.  Laney might know more because she is more clued up about this stuff.

That is disappointing Joono.................it is a shame parents were not notified somehow before it was done.

I hate seeing history destroyed.

On facebook I follow "yeoldetasmania"..................and they do some then/now pictures............and I just hate to see some of the buildings that no longer exist.............and have been replaced with something I consider horrible.

Every time I go into town we have to drive past this new building............and it looks like an egg carton to me......I absolutely hate it.............it is horrible.............how on earth did someone look at the design and decide that was the best on offer.............craaaaaaaaaaaaazy!!!
