Thanks for your good wishes Sandy, Kopes and Deb
Exhausted before the New Year arrives ........ cricket, tennis and now old school friends from t'otherside arrived in Perth to see the Hopman Cup. They are tennis fanatics as I am (at least) and they have come armed with tickets for us to see the Swiss Vs USA teams with them tomorrow night!!!! We had not planned to go - having seen Federer play last year - and I can take or leave Serena (mostly leave) but it will be an exciting match to watch.
Lazy day here today - beautiful weather and no particular plans. Will have dinner with our friends tonight though.
Here in the wonderful west we don't really 'do' fireworks tonight (some local ones) - our big fireworks show is on Australia Day. Having lived in the shadow of the Sydney Harbour Bridge for years I have seen enough crowds there to last a lifetime so don't attend them these days. The traffic jams (not to mention the rubbish left behind) - both vehicular and pedestrian - were horrendous. I now read that some local councils are charging for access to some sites!!! Watching all that money go up in smoke is not appealing when there are so many folks in need. Grinch-like? Perhaps - but too bad
Nics - sorry to hear of your daughter's problems. This time of the year certainly puts a strain on some relationships ..... hope they can work through it all. May 2019 be good to you nonetheless
Whatever mischief you are up to for New Years Eve, may you and your families have a safe and happy one and lets hope 2019 brings good health to all our friends too.
Special ~~~~~ waves to friends unable to/choose not to post here ~~~~~. You know who you are ...... just know you are in our thoughts

Happy New Year Laney and Sandy
Laney.. enjoy the tennis!
we'll be going in to watch the fireworks tonight.. Parking our car at a friend's place who lives just on the outskirts of the city.. and from there we'll all walk to the local park where we get a good view.. there are plenty of vantage points in Melb where it doesn't get too crowded. and unlike Sydney.. it's all free.. .. I couldn't stand being part of "the big crush" at Docklands.. going on the boat kept us well away from all that too. I do miss the boat.. it's shame he sold it ( I aways say that on NYE)

Hi Deb
I remember how much you used to enjoy being out on the boat on New Years Eve!
Having lived so close to it previously, experienced the disruption and inconvenience caused to residents and their visitors, the amount of rubbish left behind and seen the crowd control necessary I can understand local councils trying to recoup some costs, rather than pass the costs onto local residents. The State Government, instead of local councils, should foot the bill for the crowd control and clean up, rather than exclude folks unable to afford the costs which are being imposed. Just my opinion of course lol
I was just reading about those ghastly jet boats getting approval to operate on Sydney Harbour and wonder whose palms were greased to get that approval given the speed limits which apply there.
We used to picnic on Kurraba Point in years gone by and the jet skis there were so intrusive and ruined the peace and tranquility of the area - many letters were written to the authorities and I seem to recall their speed limits were severly restricted as a result. The damage done to the harbour foreshore was also a concern - both East and West of the Harbour Bridge and up the Parramatta River - and I think the ferries up the River were speed limited as a result as well.
Anyway - enough of my ramblings .......... back to work on the tennis court

if I didn't have cats, I'd do that too Nioc... we have a big old pear tree in the garden here and the parrots love it.. every year they come and feast on it... they're quite high up in the tree, so they're safe up there.. they are a bit noisy though

Evening Friends
Having watched the Brisbane International this afternoon I am appalled to think that Kyrgios is seen to represent Australia. He says it all when he says 'I honestly could not care less'. Hopefully tennis fans will return the favour and 'not care less about him'.
We had the pleasure of attending the Hopman Cup matches last night and witnessing the gentility and sportsmanship of Roger Federer and it throws even clearer spotlight on Kyrgios's poor behaviour.
C'mon Alex De Minaur!!!!
Hope you are all well and enjoying the first few days of 2019
