this is all so true.

But you forgot another very, very important item - this country is in debt (yes u and I ) to the tune of $30billion which has to be paid back somehow and at some time.

This came about by reckless over spending to buy votes and the labor plan was to spend the surplus that we had $12billion and make promises which would be paid for by future taxes from the mining and other industries industry which did not eventuate.

If any business is run based upon what it might earn in the future without proper budgeting it may very well end up with debt like ( not the same amount of course) we are in now.

This government has been chasing it's tail for years and sooner or later the inevitable will happen.

JG has made an excellent speech, looking only very rarely into her notes.  She was strong, articulate and yet feminine.  She spoke without bitterness or resentment.  She spoke about many issues, amazingly it seems the only one sentence referring to her being 1st woman PM and making it hopefully easier for the next, has been commented on here.

I agree it took and ton of "guts" (her words) to stand there and face the whole nation, many would have loved to see her cry but she was stalwart in her resolve and spoke well, yes, apart from the gender comment.

Not a fan but I give credit where due, very brave person.

Maybe now we can forget the gender of the leader and they can get on with running the country as it should be run.

Yes but that is just a very small debt.  If we had a debt that would not be easily manageable we would not have AAA from 3 agencies.  If the rescue was not implemented we would have huge unemployment, which would mean we would be paying benefits to many more people. Unemployed people do not have spending power, which then impacts on local small business, who then have no choice but to reduce their staff numbers.  Once you start the downward spiral into recession it is difficult to stop.

one thing I am really disappointed in is all the ministers resigning their positions. They are leaving their areas with no one to lead them heading into the winter break and an election.

So they hate this man so much they will abandon their posts and allow the government to flail around even more so.

Cats, I for one, am really pleased that they are all going.  The ALP needs to start again.  At the moment, we're seeing the last few hours of parliament until after the election, so we'll be in caretaker mode.  Plenty of time for the new ministers to become familiar with their portfolios ...

Things were going to change, anyway.  I'm sure Rudd will have different priorities and policies.

It is a huge debt for such a small economy as we have, I am a small business owner and have let 2 people go due to the down turn in the economy as a precaution.

I think we will see an upturn in the short term but until the election things will remain uncertain.

Unemployment was lessened due to the government's job creation programme, some of these jobs are laughable like the people ( have said this before) in centrelink who greet you when you walk in and ask how can they help you, not really needed.

If the surplus had been spent wisely and not allowed to get out of hand with "vote buying jobs" we would be in a much better position.

Unfortunately the labor government did not have enough confidence in it's ability to run the country and had to buy votes.

I have in the past read a great number of posts in apallingly bad taste and while you are fully entitled to question the policies and actions of the sitting Prime Minister of which ever party, but to embroil their Partner in such a disgusting way is beyond comprehension. In every search that I have done the mans name is Timothy. In some of your previous posts on other threads you have become extremely upset when comments were made regarding various forms of illness which you took great personal offence to as you said that they affected you personally. Before writing this post did you give any thought how Ms Gillard must be feeling tonight and did you even begin to think how she could feel if this gossip on her personal life became known to her.

I have enjoyed and respected your posts cat, this one is not worthy of you.

nope.. i don't think about how she feels.. I doubt she thought about how I felt when she made decisions that impacted on my life...

I do think I am allowed to wonder when Tim is.... he has not been around much.. I would have thought that he would be there for this last week knowing how much of a chance there is that she was going to be challenged.

I would have thought that he would be there by his partner's side during this stressful time.. Rudd's wife was there Gillard stabbed him in the back.
