Russia - such a disgrace !

I don't know about anyone else. but I nor our business, is any longer buying anything remotely Russian.

This is not so much choosing to take a side, but merely not wanting to be seen as condoning recent events.

So what is your point? If you feel that strongly then give your piece of land back to them. Just make sure they get your memo about it.

My point is that the countess hit the nail on the head.........

" At what point do we stop saying, “We controlled this section of the earth once so it’s forever ours”…? "

Yes Aborigines where the first settlers here, coming by boat some 40,000 - 60,000 years ago, depending on who you believe. Yes they controlled a section of the earth for a long time, but that changed over 200 years ago and others controlled that section of the earth.

Now, modern Australia is one of the most cosmopolitan places on earth with people of all races, colours and religious beliefs living here. If these people call Australia home, it is their home, just as much as the descendants of our first boat people.

I was born here, my parents and grandparents where born here. My family has tilled the soil here and managed our little patch of the environment for generations. Why am I any less an indiginous Australian than some-one else who was born here and has descendants here ?

" Ownership " of land is such a transitory thing. We might have exclusive use of a patch of dirt for a short while due to man made and enforced property law, but do we ever really own a piece of the earth ?

I,m not supporting the war in the Ukraine though. The needless violence, humanitarian loss  and property destruction is one of the greatest acts of barbarism seen in my lifetime.

One thing this whole conflict has highlighted for me is the danger in having nuclear reactors for generating power etc

Up till now, we've heard a lot about the dangers if they break down or are affected by eg earthquakes, poor maintenance etc

But if they are going to become deliberate targets in wars, in order to cut power supplies to people, then that is a whole new can of worms.

I honestly don't think humans can be trusted with nuclear stuff. No matter what our politicians might try to tell us in the future.

Well, it is disgraceful with what has happened. I recall some years back that Russia like China were the voices of reason when it came to the invasion of Iraq which resulted in immeasurable and horrific ongoing consequences. Now Russia appears to be something similar.

Quite a few people in the West didn't mind Putin because he seemed less crazed and had the appearance of more integrity than many prominent Western leaders. For those concerned about health sovereignty, his restrictions on GM crops and food were a beacon of hope. To a degree he may have had more integrity than any of the past Western leaders around then. But with what he has done now, it is plain wrong. Sure our media here is selective on what they report and how it is portrayed. There will be distortions. The media here is just as controlled as any media is in a country that has a dictator or a spokesperson for a nameless group of people.  But our media whilst presented differently is still controlled.

Anyway we are looking the destruction of lives, the disruption of lives from the perspective of those who are on the receiving end. His reasons for invading the Ukraine may be less bogus than those presented by the US in its invasions of Iraq, but an invasion is still an invasion.

I've never had  any real liking for Putin or any dislike.  I did respect him on a few things. Sadly I have to voice condemnation on what he has done here

So true said!  Apart from medical research, there should be no nuclear reactors.  Most politicians who partake in the placement of nuclear power facilities are under influence IMO.

Some countries put their nuclear waste into tank shells. Look at the deformities that result.

Not buying into the tank thing but C4's comments on medical requirements are valid.

@ domino - Not sure if any of your family has ever had cancer or other conditions requiring radiation treatment, but a number of mine have including the missus recently. Radiation treatment contributed to saving her life.

Many radioisotopes are made in nuclear reactors, some in cyclotrons. Generally neutron-rich ones and those resulting from nuclear fission need to be made in reactors; neutron-depleted ones such as PET radionuclides are made in cyclotrons with energy ranging from 9 to 19 MeV. Higher-energy machines of about 30 MeV are needed for most SPECT radionuclides. There are about 40 activation product radioisotopes and five fission product ones made in reactors.
