I dont think any of us ever want to see " war machines " put into action, but would you prefer that Australia had no military capability at all ? That would have been great around 15 years ago when a friend of mine who is a highly placed ASIO operative ( yes spy ) told me that several years before that, Australia was on its highest military watch rating as there was an iminent threat of a " military incident " with Indonesia.

The agency believed the only thing stopping Indonesia from taking military action was that Australia at that time had a much more technologically advanced military than Indonesia and could rely on our military allies in case of an offensive Indonesian attack.

Unfortunately the world is an unsettled place and out of control global population is placing even greater pressures on limited resources. It would be wonderful if humans could all live together peacefully in some dreamy, global Utopia. Unfortunately the reality is countries need a strong defensive military capability.

There is no doubt that the Liberals in South Australia still have several challenges ahead. Constant cost cutting and poor planning and administration by the past state Labor government have left the states health system in crisis. Ambulance ramping at major hospitals has reached unprecedented levels as Labors " new, most expensive hospital in the world per patient "  was always simply too small for our population and the closure of our largest hospital has left the state without the capacity to care for our elderly and vulnerable.

The education sector is also in crisis as our states TAFE has been independantly audited and found to be grossly incompetant, giving certificates to students which do not meet industry standards and resulting in " trained " ex students having to restudy and resit exams.

Our Schools have also suffered as a result of Labors incompetence. SA. Students regularly place at the very bottom of national NAPLAN results. The really silly part is that the states teachers union has just gone on strike seeking a pay rise and demanding that the SA Liberals continue with Labors disastrous education policies which have seen the students suffer the worst educational outcomes in Australia.

All of these policy areas are supposed to be Labors strong points and yet after more than a decade of Labor rule social institutions are all in crisis.

Add to that the scourge of corruption which follows the union dominated Labor party around like a bad smell and the Liberals have a huge mess to clean up. The states ICAC commissioner has recently come out and publicly stated that corruption is endemic in all levels of the public service with bribes and kick backs a regular occurrence in state procurement contracts and gross waste, mis-management and non accountability also a problem.

The change of government has lead to a dramatic rise in business and consumer confidence in the state and this is already flowing through to a fall in unemployment, increased house and commercial property prices in the face of a national falling property price cycle and investment decisions by businesses. The Liberals are addressing exhornenant payroll tax impositions and have introduced a range of other policy measures to assist small to medium sized business to grow and employ people.

The Liberals have already overseen improvements in the economy. It remains to be seen wether they can clean up the huge mess in social policy left behind by the last Labor government..

Official unemployment figures are the biggest government lie out.
One hour of work in a fortnight turns an unemployed person into an employed one.

That is very true and its something that riles me too, but in SA full time employment has seen signifigant improvement since the Liberals took over the top job, along with a rise in part time workers.

You can throw as many red hearings and diversions out there as you like, but all of the official guages show the states economy has improved dramatically since the Liberals won office.

Unfortunately the problems with social policy are going to be much harder to fix. After more than a decade of Labor cost cutting and mis-management which has seen major hospitals closed and replaced with one very expensive, smaller capacity unit, poor oversight in aged care,  entrenched mis management and waste in public service and the worst educational outcomes in NAPLAN tests in Australia, it is going to take a lot of time and money to rectify the social problems left behind by Labor.

Frankly the problems are so large that I doubt that any government, regardless of colour could clean up the mess in one term of office.

So rather than make sure that they work properly just change the law.
Gotta love the Liberal party

when ever i hear the news 'we created X number of NEW jobs'

i want to know how many jobs were lost in the same period.

seems only fair to see both sides of the numbers.
