I like this kind of story.

I like being my own check out chic. Supermarkets have already reduced the number of aisles at the checkout they have open. I would never go through the self serve if I had a trolley load and neither would most people I think.
The self checkout is for people that have a few items. All of those extra checkout machines need to be maintained so there is extra employment.

I used to be a check-out chick.
The day I scan my own groceries will be the day the supermarkets give me a discount for doing it.
Next thing, they'll want me to fill shelves! Or unload the truck!

I am constantly 'invited' to use them.....I say no thanks, one day these will cost you your job.
I answer, "The shoplifter's checkout? No thanks". If the person doesn't disappear immediately, I add that you and the person/s at that checkout could open another couple of regular checkouts if you want to get us through faster.

That was before scanners. I had to key in the prices. And I had a "packer" bagging the goods. Each item was priced with a pricing gun as it was put on the shelves. However, the shopper had to check items against the docket for mistaken key amounts.

And they had "Little Golden Books" instead of chocolates for grizzling kids.
