my son was selling an item on ebay, was contacted by text advising they wanted to put the money in his bank account that night and pick up the item the next day, very pushy. He was concerned why they couldn't pay cash on pick up, ie an expensive item, who pays cash in an account without seeing it. Person kept insisting need bank acc details asap, needs to be done today.

Sons question was how could this be a scam? if the money is deposited what could they do?  He didn't go ahead with the sale as he has his doubts....

anyone know how u can get scammed this way?

These are a few scenario's that they may have used or another way.

Claiming they have paid and showing a fake deposit slip or some other form of "proof".

If they had paid they would've done an unauthorised transaction dispute via the bank.

Paid with a stolen bank account and then the account holder could've done an unauthorized transaction

dispute.

There are many ways to be scammed.

Once they have your son's name and address, phone number and bank account details they are well on the way to committing identity theft if nothing else.
