Severe VITAMIN D Deficiency....!!!!

....picked up by my new Dr. On supplements now, got to have a bone density test next time I see him.

I have been so careful to eat right, plenty of vit B rich foods and A and C and E etc. I regularly eat fresh fish and canned fish like sardines and eat egg yolks.BUT I think my problem was that I have been sun 'shy' for many years as have pale skin and tried to avoid sunburn/skin cancer etc.

Darker pigmented people and elderly need to stay in sun longer than fair skinned people to get the vit D.

According to Dr G I should be getting 6 mins in the sun ev day in summer and 28 minutes or so, ev day in winter.

Chemist girls told me that they are seeing a lot of women and young teen girls with same .....getting Vit D supplements. Was told by pathology girl that Vit D oil is better absorbed by our bodies than in capsule form but have caps as prescribed

Is this something recent that is being discovered in 'plague' proportions? Anyone know?

Apparently signs and symptoms are similar to depression and that thing called SAD.

Well I was certainly experiencing a lot of muscular pain and inner bone pains for a few years.

Thank goodness my new Dr has picked this up......could have been on my way to getting ruddy ricketts!

seriously!

Don't be frightened Rose.  You can make sure the health professionals sorting it out for you know exactly what your allergies are well in advance, and they will take that into account.

How is that gorgeous Lilycat of yours? xx

Re: Severe VITAMIN D Deficiency....!!!!

paints  3 years ago I went from having a high bone density one year to a low density the next, they gave me a blood test and I had very low vit D.  They have no idea why I got the deficiency as I am out in the sun every day.  They put me on Vit D 2 tabs daily and 1 tab calcium after a year my levels had risen I no longer have to take vit D but am still on calcium due to my age I am 51.

1 year after stopping the vit D my bone density is fine, I have the test yearly and also blood tests,

Re: Severe VITAMIN D Deficiency....!!!!

I've been on vitamin D and calcium supplements for some years. it's no big deal, Paints, once your level vitamin D level has risen sufficiently you'll feel fine again.

Yes! That's the other thing.....Calcium!! I f you don't have enough vit D.....your gut does not absorb calcium.....so your bones get brittle etc. Sheesh

Something else besides calcium doesn't get absobed too.....cannot remember what though

Cheers all for thoughts, comments and sharing.

Re: Severe VITAMIN D Deficiency....!!!!

to aps.....ref A multi vitamin every couple of days is what I take if needed.

.............................................................................................................................................................................

This is main reason I posted thread aps I HAVE been taking multi vitamin tabs for YEARS!

Did not prevent me getting a severe vit D deficiency.

Just wanted to make others aware so they can have a test if they feel they might have Vit D deficiency

Hope all is okay though with everyoneHeart

Re: Severe VITAMIN D Deficiency....!!!!

I had been told that, post meopause, calcium supplements could only stabalise your bone density not improve it, but mine improved significantly in the 12 months folowing my starting on Citracal.

Here you go paints:)

I have added a health tan so you are not so pale anymore, it's an all over tan too 🙂

I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.
