Severe VITAMIN D Deficiency....!!!!

....picked up by my new Dr. On supplements now, got to have a bone density test next time I see him.

I have been so careful to eat right, plenty of vit B rich foods and A and C and E etc. I regularly eat fresh fish and canned fish like sardines and eat egg yolks.BUT I think my problem was that I have been sun 'shy' for many years as have pale skin and tried to avoid sunburn/skin cancer etc.

Darker pigmented people and elderly need to stay in sun longer than fair skinned people to get the vit D.

According to Dr G I should be getting 6 mins in the sun ev day in summer and 28 minutes or so, ev day in winter.

Chemist girls told me that they are seeing a lot of women and young teen girls with same .....getting Vit D supplements. Was told by pathology girl that Vit D oil is better absorbed by our bodies than in capsule form but have caps as prescribed

Is this something recent that is being discovered in 'plague' proportions? Anyone know?

Apparently signs and symptoms are similar to depression and that thing called SAD.

Well I was certainly experiencing a lot of muscular pain and inner bone pains for a few years.

Thank goodness my new Dr has picked this up......could have been on my way to getting ruddy ricketts!

seriously!

I spend every second day a minimum of 2hrs outside (well driving my car) and I have low vit D.  You just can't win sometimes

I think so. Years ago I'd drink at least 1/2 gallon of milk a day, close to a gallon. Craved milk until I got hit with gall stones and stopped drinking it. All sorts of problems developed and after hours and hours of searching the net for answers, I found it. Vitamin D deficiency. I avoided the sun too.

Last week the doctor said testing vitamin D levels is now a standard test because so many people lack proper levels.

Be careful...taking too much vitamin D can damage the kidneys.

Taking Vitamin D doesn't necessarily mean the body absorbs it.

I vaguely remember fat in the diet is a good method of getting Vit D into the body and other

facilitators can also help in absorbtion.

Jimmy

I also drink a lot of milk, always have done since 1/3rd of a pint was prescribed at school !

My bones show it as well - or the doc that had to drill my leg said so. Now just got to keep it up.

I learned not long ago that the fat in whole milk is needed to properly digest milk. I was drinking 1% milk after the gall stones. It gave me a stomach ache especially when I slept. No problems since I switched to whole milk.

Cheers Jimmy. I had my gall bladder removed about 3 years ago.....I also stopped drinking milk (have a bad reaction if take more than that) and started having hot water on any cereal with a bit of whole yoghurt instead. Maybe removal of gall bladder contributes somehow to lack vit D as maybe the bile used to help in my body/intestine assimilating Vit D? I think this might be the case though not sure.  Anyway I am going to start having half a cup of whole milk ev day along with more yoghurt during the day for calcium from food. I noticed my D3 caps of 1000IUD have some calcium in them too.

Have always had whole milk in house. Always believed that the 'wholer' the milk the better-hate skim and reduced fat milks *BLAH!

Magnesium levels......am going to research this next as can be an issue??

Started walking tonight too and am going to walk twice a day. Got to lose a few kilos, like 10 and get some sunshine and walking never killed anyone right?!!

Also thought I would mention here, for those interested that I was told by a health professional that manufacturers of sunscreens have been called upon by the medical profession to produce a sunscreen that continues to protect the skin from harmful rays yet allows Vitamin D component rays through.

We have obviously gone overboard with sun protection.

I know that most dangerous skin melanomas occur more frequently on parts of the body that are usually protected.

i do not think that counts as glass filters some of the rays out.  You have to be in direct sunlight.  I also have been diagnosed with vitamin D deficiency some years ago.  I was down to about 1/3 of normal level.  That is despite spending quite a bit of time outside, walking dogs, working in the garden.  Now, I take supplements, make sure I spend even more time in sun, but I am still not in the normal level.  Fortunately my bone density is still well over 100% for my age.  However, once you lose your bone density, I do not think you can get it back; you can stop the deterioration though.

I wonder what is going on; this is a worldwide problem and children have died from vitamin D deficiency in UK.  The "slip, slop, slap"  or as some doctors call it now "slip, slop, snap" campaign is being blamed, but I think it must be more that that.  Like all our food being so processed that we are not getting out of it some vital elements?  Even fresh veg and fruits are not all that fresh.

Very few foods naturally contain vitamin D, and foods that are fortified with vitamin D are often inadequate to satisfy either a child's or an adult's vitamin D requirement. Vitamin D deficiency causes rickets in children and will precipitate and exacerbate osteopenia, osteoporosis, and fractures in adults. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with increased risk of common cancers, autoimmune diseases, hypertension, and infectious diseases.

Few foods naturally contain vitamin D, including oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines and herring and oils from fish, including cod liver oil.

Some foods are fortified with Vitamin D. Some margarines and spreads. I do know that some cheeses have added Vit D. Some milks, some breads.

Severe VITAMIN D Deficiency....!!!!

Hi Tas, this winter they are going to do Efudix on my face so I will be hiding for about 6 weeks, not looking forward to it but they say it will be ok.

I have my own supply...........every 6 months I slather it on for a week.  If you have no pre-cancers, you don't end up blotchy.  I'm immunosuppressed, so every 3  months I go in and they look for things to cut off.  Last squamous cancer was on the back of my right hand, and has almost healed.  Bad news is that they found cancer cells on the base of the removed object, so they're going to schedule a Moh's surgery.
