Hi everyone
Not sure if you are aware or not, but Australia Post has just increased their postage charges by 30% and this will flow on to buyers & sellers alike. Whether you buy with ‘free postage’ or buy with postage as an additional expense, we can all expect to pay more.
What has really got up my nose is how Aust Post can justify the previous charge of $1 for ‘signature on delivery’ with an increase today of $2.95 for the same service! This charge is now being applied to the ClickandSend ebay/austpost satchels that many ebay sellers in Australia use.
We are already fighting a losing battle to remain competitive in the global market because of our extortionate postage costs within Australia and to post internationally.
Sadly to say, I feel we are going to see ‘free postage’ go by the wayside now. Because 90% of buyers are using Paypal, sellers need to show ‘proof of delivery’ in the event of a buyer opening a dispute in Paypal, claiming an item has not been received. So many parcels go missing, whether through theft, damage, fraud or abandonment and if the extra $2.95 for a signature on delivery is not taken up, then the seller will automatically have the case closed in the buyer’s favour. It is that simple. Registered Post is no longer. If you want Registered Post, it will cost $2.95 for the signature on Delivery plus $1.50 to cover than article up to the value of $100!
Anyway, if you want to read more, here are a couple of links. There is an online petition which has over 1000 signatures that you may like to add your name to. This petition now has media interest with a phone interview from Karen with ABC Radio the Sydney Morning Herald’s article and callers ringing into 2GB Radio in Sydney.
In closing, if I can say one thing… there is nothing that riles an aussie more than seeing fellow aussies kicked when they are already down 😞
Cheers
Evil Elle aka Ellen

What really gets up my nose, sellers in the UK ,China Korea and some Us sellers can post items to Australia CHEAPER than AP can post it from one Sydney suburb to another.

Hi Ellen 🙂 I was thinking about this huge price hike and wondering how much of it is the result of the huge amount of goods coming in from over seas that AP have to deliver and are not being paid for compared to how much is being sent locally or over seas.
I know nearly every purchase I make comes from HK, UK or the USA
Oz really cant compete at a global level because we are just some few

I buy from the US because they don't gouge me for post. The Aus suppliers (not ebay related) want to charge a minimum of $20 postage even if postage is $10. Not only that, they impose minimum quantities. So instead of buying 5 items I have to buy 3, 5 or 10 of each item, depending on supplier. NY = $15 for the 5 items I need. Aus = $60 for the 5 items I need. I can't make money like that. I can't pay rent with extra items.

I never rip anyone off for postage , only charge exactly what it cost to send it I don't charge for packing ect.

That's right, you can't blame people for shopping globally. I am currently looking at buying my daughter a pram from the USA - that will save me about $400.
Hawk - Australia Post are losing millions processing overseas parcels and we are paying for it.
Its hard all the way around, I all ways search for local items but the type of things I am mainly buying being electronic, model gear or car items the local price is nearly always double after taking postage in to account and more often than not the items are the same, its just the local sellers have purchased from the same places and reselling, I will pay a small premium to support local sellers and speed of delivery, but not double.
Yes I have had a few dud items that either didnt work or were so poor in quality, I look at it as I am taking on the responsibility of the importer and just have to wear the odd loss, over all I am happy and miles ahead.
Its sad local sellers cant be supported more but that's the way its going now with a global economy.

I wasted many hours trying to source the products in Australia. I ended up with a supply of spares that I don't need, many hours wasted and many dollars wasted on phone calls.
Another on is a button supplier. He insists people don't buy buttons online.
I had just told him I would buy from him if I could buy online. I had just told him that I do buy my buttons online. He insists that buttons are tactile and nobody will buy them online. A quick search online revealed multiple Australian sellers of buttons. :^O

Your button seller is not keeping pace with the times, people would much prefer to search for items online than waste time and money going from store to store only to never find that perfect item, they can do this during the evening instead of wasting valuable day time hours.
Any business that doesn't have a online exposure will end up disappearing and if they dont make the effort to sell online are missing out on a huge market, even small business can improve sales online at very little cost, I don't understand why they wouldn't besides being ignorant of customer buying trends.
