No jab, no play campaign launched to ban unvaccinated kids from childcare centres and preschools

CHILDCARE centres should have the right to ban unvaccinated kids from childcare centres and preschools under a proposed "no jab, no play" policy.

The Sunday Telegraph and The Daily Telegraph are today launching a campaign to stop the rise in the number of children succumbing to preventable diseases because parents are failing to have them fully immunised.

Although only 1.5 per cent of parents are "vaccine refusers" or conscientious objectors, many parents are forgetful, leaving areas of NSW with vaccination rates below 85 per cent - despite the inarguable scientific proof that the vaccination program has saved thousands of lives and eradicated diseases that crippled children just a generation ago, including polio.

No jab, no play campaign reveals vaccination refusals high as babies die

http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/no-jab-no-play-campaign-reveals-vaccination-refusals-high-as-babies-die/story-e6freuy9-1226635635187

The Richmond-Tweed region, in northern NSW, and Cairns in Far North Queensland, can today be identified as the areas that have the highest number of conscientious objectors - or "vaccine refusers" - in Australia.

On day two The Daily Telegraph's joint campaign with The Sunday Telegraph, which calls for parents and official...

the Australian Childhood Immunisation Register has shown the proportion of youngsters with no vaccines recorded in Far North Queensland is between 5 and 8 per cent. In the Richmond-Tweed area, it is 8 per cent, way above the national figure.

They were also home to Dana McCaffery of Lennox Head,   who died aged four weeks on March 9, 2009, and Kailis Smith from Tweed, who passed away on April 22, 2011 aged nine weeks

Across the state border, Malakai Taylor died on September 17, 2012 in Cairns, aged six weeks.

The national average of vaccine refusers is 1.5 per cent, but Far North Queensland has a rate of 3.3 per cent and in Richmond-Tweed it's 9.9 per cent, or nearly one in 10.

Health Minister Tanya Plibersek, a firm supporter of immunisation, oversaw the change of federal government terminology from "conscientious objector" to "vaccine refuser" for this group.

A loophole still exists which allows families to continue receiving the 50 per cent childcare rebate - conditional on up-to-date vaccinations - if they register as "vaccine refusers".

Far North Queensland and Richmond-Tweed areas also coincide with higher rates per head of whooping cough, according to Paul Corben, the Director of Public Health for the Far North Coast Area Health Service.

"During the epidemics of 2008-2009 we saw stark differences in adjacent communities," Mr Corben said.

"Whooping cough raged through Byron at the height of the epidemic.

"It had twice the rate of adjacent Ballina which has a good vaccination rate."

The north coast communities with the highest number of reported cases of whooping cough over the period 2008-2010 were those with lowest childhood vaccination rates: Bellingen, Lismore and Byron.

In contrast, the three local government areas with the highest vaccination rates had the lowest attack rates: Port Macquarie-Hastings, Clarence Valley and Coffs Harbour, he said.

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a highly contagious disease.

Immunisation expert Professor Peter McIntyre said the vaccine was good at reducing the risk of a severe strain of the disease but it was not good at preventing infection altogether - the reason why it persisted.

"Clearly there are benefits to you as an individual to vaccinate, but there are benefits to others in the community, particularly babies," he said.

In Queensland, the Cairns epidemic started in September 2011 with 723 cases recorded.

as some children are unable to be vaccinated we need to accomadate those children in child care. some are semi vaccinated some fully. parents need to stay informed.

Since it is the unvaccinated children who are at risk, this makes no sense at all?  If there is an outbreak of a disease in schools or child care, unvaccinated children must stay home, to protect them.

Vaccinated children would not be at risk would they, if vaccination works.

They need to do a campaign to inform adults that they need a booster as vaccination is not for life.

I cannot book my cat into a cattery if I do not produce a vaccination certificate. The same goes for dogs. Yet infants & toddlers are allowed to walk around without restriction.

Diptheria is on the comeback, can anybody seriously not look out for the best interests of their child?.

The lies spread about vaccinations  is criminal & that web site & the so called "doctor" is a fraud & a liar & should be arrested for criminal activity.

The stupidity of young parents following this trendy fallacious rubbish is criminal in the extreme & yet a child swimming nude on a public beach & the adult is classed as some kind of ped or worse.

The twitter & social media outrage is getting out of hand & people should stop it.

Excellent point-wonder how long the vaccine lasts anyway?

Children really need to be vaccinated, the more we have vaccinated the better because it protects the children that can't be vaccinated due to medical reasons, it is called herd immunity.

Now what is happening is that those people that cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons are being put at risk by those that are not vaccinated by "educated choice".

It is putting people at risk.... even those that are vaccinated because you can still catch a virus that you have been vaccinated against....

So long as it is the children that are not vaccinated because of the parents choice I have no problem. The littlies that can't be vaccinated must still be able to attend and they will be protected by the "herd" that are.

Whooping cough is a real problem at the moment, it is at epidemic levels.... and measles that was once never seen is also making a  comeback. this is putting lots of people at risk, even those that are vaccinated but are going through chemo therapy or have compromised immune systems.

I support the proposal so long as those with medical exemption are still allowed to go.

is it every 10 years for boosters? as adults. I did read somewhere on a Gov website that 50% of whooping cough is traced back to the parents or caregivers passing it on to the children.

Everyone is different... some people will hold their protected status for a lot longer.

Where i work there is one lady that seems to need her boosters for hep A & C every five years yet others never need a booster.

Other will also need to get two or three shots to become immunised.

Whooping cough is one that really needs a booster as an adult.

What you  need to do is actually get a blood test to check your status.
