Shamed into losing 45 kg

http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/nicole-whitehead-was-shamed-into-losing-weight-after-humilia...

On what should've been a carefree trip to a theme park with friends, Nicole felt so much shame that it spurred the obese young woman to change things for the better.

It took three staff members to help jam her oversized figure into a roller-coaster seat. She was so humiliated that she didn't go on any other rides that day.

Now aged 23 and happily married to husband Jay, she has overhauled her bad habits, especially her diet.

"I used to have a few rounds of white toast with full-fat butter for breakfast. Now it's still toast, but wholemeal bread with cereals as well," she says.

Nicole says she had no confidence as a bigger woman and hated shopping for clothes.

She also had to go to the emergency room twice because her mass affected her breathing, which led to panic attacks.

But now she says her confidence is restored ... and she's not afraid to visit a theme park.

"After what happened at the theme park, I was so proud to be able to go scuba diving. I now feel amazing compared to what I used to be like and I'm so pleased with the achievement," she says.

So what's the moral of the Story?

did you know, that a disclaimer at the end of your message means nothing? For a chance that it may mean something, it has to be at the top/front/beginning of the content.

I think shame is the motivator for most to lose weight, it was me, well that and my health. I was embarrassed, I was self conscious and I was unwell, all great motivators!

Are you encouraging people to shame others to change their negative behaviours for their own good?

are you suggesting that Muggsy is God?

Being a bit of a drama queen, there Bob.

Do people, fat or thin, go to hell because they ignore the signs from God?

I have no clue about that, being an outright and proud of it, Athiest.

You will have to tell me, if indeed you care if I know or not. I am not hanging by my teeth,

well everyone knows that people who don't believe in God will go to hell.  so they're all going.

and each religion believes that anyoine who doesn't follow their religion will go to hell, so that means that everyone else is going.

so whichever way you look at it, it doesn't matter if we are good, bad, fat, thin, etc...

we're all going to hell no matter what we do, or who we are, so we may as well all just do what makes us happy, whatever it may be that does that, whilst we can

Agreed, true shame comes from knowing we have done the wrong thing.

I was assaulted recently due to being "too fat".

The police had to become involved and the assault was by a total stranger.

Was that a sign from God? If so why did God deliver his message in such a heavy handed and callous way?

Or is it OK if it spurs me on to lose weight?

You may have been assaulted by that man because of his beliefs, (pleased to see you're ok, and sorry such a **bleep**py thing happened, BTW), but that may not have been the "message" or the "lesson" that God was trying to teach/send you. The message may not have been meant fior you, or that might not have been the intended message,

The man attacked you because he was an ignorant git.

How do you know it's not God's will that this happened?

I didn't say it wasn't God's will. I said maybe the "message" wasn't meant for Bump, or that maybe that wasn't the message that he intended to teach Bump. Maybe he was just trying to teach her to always carry some pepper spray or to always make sure you're protected.

And some are too thick to realise they have done wrong. Bump shared a story and you dismissed it. And kept doing so. Consider the topic, then go get yourself some compassion/sympathy/social awareness.

I never said anywhere that being overweight was cause for shame - only that it was bad for our health.

This comment was a response to lind9650, NOT Bump and was a general comment meant to indicate that if something has made us feel shame, we have to be aknowledging to ourselves that we have done/are doing something wrong. Nobody else can make us feel shame if we don't feel that we are in the wrong.
