Tony Abbott’s daughter Frances received a “chairman’s scholarship” for a degree costing more than $60,000 from the Whitehouse Institute of Design where an Abbott donor sits as chairman on the board of governors, Guardian Australia can reveal.

The revelation raises questions for the prime minister over whether the scholarship should have been declared on his interests register.

The Coalition government is also under pressure over changes to higher education funding announced in the budget.

Frances Abbott undertook a bachelor of design at the Whitehouse Institute of Design in Sydney from 2011 to 2013. Guardian Australia has confirmed that she received a scholarship during her time at the institute.

“Frances definitely was a student with us and received a chairman’s scholarship,” Leanne Whitehouse, director of the Institute told Guardian Australia. She declined to detail how many times the “chairman’s scholarship” has been awarded previously, but the institute’s website makes no references to the scholarship and states the institute “does not currently offer scholarships to gain a place into the Bachelor of Design”.

Same sort of thing as what happened on these forums with Mr Rudd and Ms Gillard a year or so ago. Post after post nitpicking at the both of them. It appears to me as though it was all fine and dandy to sling off at them, but oh dear, don't you dear touch a hair on our Tony and his family.

Rudd and Gillard though was fair game and they copped it bigtime from some posters in particular on this forum.

It sounds as though rules were bent in order for FA to be granted a scholarship. No other scholarships granted in the 25 year history of the college. No other scholarshops granted since. The board members not consulted. Good on her for being granted a scholarship but it is a pity that the reason behind it is dubious. Mate's Rates.

But I don’t blame her. I blame her parents for putting the young woman in this awkward and murky spotlight. I’m sure the Abbotts are a loving and warm family who want only the best for their girls but this was a dropped ball. Politically and personally.

Because Frances indubitably did receive that scholarship because of who she is not because of her extraordinary ability, above and beyond all her fellow students. That is my solid opinion. I came to it because I know that she will have been gifted, smiled and enveloped in a swaddling of gratuitous entitlements ever since her father began climbing the political power beanstalk.

This scholarship does appear to have spontaneously materialised almost exclusively because of Frances’ DNA rather than her portfolio and that, to my mind, was an awful thing to do to her. If it was a gratuitous hand-out, then it was an insult to her fellow students by the Whitehouse Institute of Design.

And her father should have foreseen that this could hurt Frances as much as him and he should have declined or declared the scholarship, just to be safe. If not for himself, for his daughter’s reputation.

I would suggest instead that Leanne Whitehouse is a canny business women who knows who can butter her bread and understands that having the daughter of a potential prime minister would be a coup for her college and it's alumni.

Thats not the point at all. The Whitehouse College kept the scholarship secret, they didn't want anyone to know about it, even some senior staff. Why would that be hmmm?

Done them more harm than good.
