Tony Abbott’s daughter Frances received a “chairman’s scholarship” for a degree costing more than $60,000 from the Whitehouse Institute of Design where an Abbott donor sits as chairman on the board of governors, Guardian Australia can reveal.
The revelation raises questions for the prime minister over whether the scholarship should have been declared on his interests register.
The Coalition government is also under pressure over changes to higher education funding announced in the budget.
Frances Abbott undertook a bachelor of design at the Whitehouse Institute of Design in Sydney from 2011 to 2013. Guardian Australia has confirmed that she received a scholarship during her time at the institute.
“Frances definitely was a student with us and received a chairman’s scholarship,” Leanne Whitehouse, director of the Institute told Guardian Australia. She declined to detail how many times the “chairman’s scholarship” has been awarded previously, but the institute’s website makes no references to the scholarship and states the institute “does not currently offer scholarships to gain a place into the Bachelor of Design”.

Catmad - I will respond to each post individually:
Post 82. You say that it has been established that the item is non-declarable.
If so then someone is doing something dodgy because the info I posted about Code of Conduct makes it clear that it IS declarable. There is nothing ambiguous in what I posted.
Post 83. You say money comes direct from Leanne Whitehouse as if that makes it OK.
Would it also be OK if the money came direct from Alan Jones pocket? Or Gina Rhineharts pocket? No. She recieved a gift expressly because her father was Tony Abbott.
Post 84. You say our kids should be self sufficient and stand on their own 2 feet.
Indeed. But she was standing on her father 2 feet in this case wasn't she. If only our future uni students had the advantage of a helping hand...
Post 85. You say that The Whitehouse School is independent.
It may be a private college but it is not independent. It recieves substantial government funding. There fore it is open to scrutiny.
Post 86. You mention union slush funds.
Aside from this being a deflection and off topic, no one is suggesting that this is acceptabl;e either.
Post 88. You mention that Leanne Whitehouse can give cash to whoever she wants.
Yes that it is true. But she doesn't does she? And the crux of the issue is that whilst she can give funds to whoever she wants, the recipient needs to use their brains to understand the implications and consequence of accepting that cash. And if they are a public servant, then it should not be accepted at all.

I am not as "true blue" as yourself NW, but I concur with your comments. Whilst The Guardian attempts to justify its partisan article(s) as being in the public interest apropos pecuniary interests (nonsense), I have yet to find any ALP parliamentarians joining in. It would appear that they respect the convention that members children are off limits for just political advantage, unlike the somewhat unprincipled Guardian, and some hand fed contributors here.

Prime Minister Abbott’s failure to record the scholarship in his register of interests sits at odds with what appears to be an enthusiasm for recording benefits received by himself and his family.
Many of the entries are seemingly benign, including the declaration of a “modest one-off sum” earned by his daughter Bridget, “for her part-time work as an Ambassador for the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival”.
In other declarations Mr Abbott discloses attending charity occasions and major sporting events with his family.
“My wife and daughters, Frances and Bridget, attended the Australian premier of ‘The Great Gatsby’ in Sydney on Wednesday 22 May 2013 as guests of Village Roadshow,” a declaration from June 5, 2013 records.
In another declaration, from March 2013, Mr Abbott even discloses that his daughters Frances and Bridget accompanied him to a Myer fashion launch in Melbourne, even though they paid their own travel and accommodation costs.
Yet nowhere in Mr Abbott’s disclosures does he mention the $60,000 scholarship awarded to daughter Frances.
Abbott’s spokesperson told New Matilda this morning that “if alternative advice is provided, Mr Abbott will meet the amended requirements.”
In fact, the requirements don’t need amending. Mr Abbott’s Member’s Interest Register, however, apparently does.

This has nothing to do with being true blue or any other colour.
He should have know better than to put his daughter in such a position, is all.
If they wanted her so bad he should have known it was for what was in it for them in terms of advertising and definitely should have declared it, or just refused to take the freebie.

Your memory must fail sometimes because there have been threads about the Rudd children.
There was one before the election when the youngest started work for the father, most recently.

yes, a search here might show that the children have been mentioned quite a few times. A google search would show much more.
