Tony Abbott’s daughter Frances received a “chairman’s scholarship” for a degree costing more than $60,000 from the Whitehouse Institute of Design where an Abbott donor sits as chairman on the board of governors, Guardian Australia can reveal.
The revelation raises questions for the prime minister over whether the scholarship should have been declared on his interests register.
The Coalition government is also under pressure over changes to higher education funding announced in the budget.
Frances Abbott undertook a bachelor of design at the Whitehouse Institute of Design in Sydney from 2011 to 2013. Guardian Australia has confirmed that she received a scholarship during her time at the institute.
“Frances definitely was a student with us and received a chairman’s scholarship,” Leanne Whitehouse, director of the Institute told Guardian Australia. She declined to detail how many times the “chairman’s scholarship” has been awarded previously, but the institute’s website makes no references to the scholarship and states the institute “does not currently offer scholarships to gain a place into the Bachelor of Design”.

He should have know better than to put his daughter in such a position, is all.
If they wanted her so bad he should have known it was for what was in it for them in terms of advertising and definitely should have declared it, or just refused to take the freebie.
I know that you think Tony Abbott owns his wife and children the truth is that he does not and his daughters can take any scholarchip that they want.. they are adults...
And no they don't need to advertise anything... they wanted to give this young woman money because they wanted her to be part of their school.. they thought she would be an asset.... for whatever reason...
They do not have to do what you suggest... the law does not say that.

I am not as "true blue" as yourself NW, but I concur with your comments. Whilst The Guardian attempts to justify its partisan article(s) as being in the public interest apropos pecuniary interests (nonsense), I have yet to find any ALP parliamentarians joining in. It would appear that they respect the convention that members children are off limits for just political advantage, unlike the somewhat unprincipled Guardian, and some hand fed contributors here.
Quite a humorous post, if it was ok for dad to drag his kids around the country and use them in any way he saw fit then it's Ok that his dodgy dealings now come in for criticism......

Quite right Cat. Nothing untoward or against the law has been found against Frances Abbott accepting this scholarship.
A truckload of sour grapes is all.

Growing community anger over the awarding of a secret scholarship worth $60,000 to Frances Abbott is unlikely to abate amid fresh revelations that the daughter of the Prime Minister appears to have been employed by the college in a job with no defined role.
Media have widely reported that Tony Abbott’s middle daughter was also rewarded with a job at the Whitehouse Institute of Design. The Prime Minister and Whitehouse have maintained that Frances’ seemingly favourable treatment by the college has been based on merit.
But documents obtained by New Matilda suggest that the circumstances leading up to Ms Abbott’s employment bear a striking resemblance to those around the awarding of her secret scholarship.
An internal staff register from Whitehouse Institute details 74 employees at the college, spread across two campuses – Sydney and Melbourne.
Every single member of staff has a role allocated to them in the register, with one exception — Frances Abbott.
Under the heading ‘Role’ her entry is blank – it simply lists her name, and a private email address.
A spokesperson for the Prime Minister told New Matilda: "Questions regarding Frances’ employment should be directed to Whitehouse. I have no further comment."
Whitehouse Institute has been contacted repeatedly for comment, but has yet to respond to questions.
Classmates and Whitehouse staff have told New Matilda that Ms Abbott was a good student, and well liked by her colleagues.
The revelations come after New Matilda revealed on Wednesday that Frances paid just $7,546 for the $68,182 Bachelor of Design degree at Whitehouse Institute.
Internal documents from the school contradicted claims by the Prime Minister that he failed to declare the $60,636 benefit to his daughter because the scholarship was awarded on the basis of merit.
It emerged on Wednesday that rather than competing for a scholarship, Ms Abbott was pursued.
Chairman of the Whitehouse Institute, Les Taylor — a long-time friend of the Abbott family — urged her to attend the college after Whitehouse became aware she was thinking of enrolling with a competitor.
It also emerged that the General Manager’s Scholarship awarded to Ms Abbott has never been publicly advertised by the Whitehouse Institute, its existence was kept secret from senior staff, and it was awarded to Ms Abbott after just one meeting with the school’s owner, Leanne Whitehouse, in apparent contravention of Whitehouse’s publicly stated scholarship selection criteria.

No one has suggested that FA broke the law.
But TA has certainly broken the conditions of his employment as a Federal public servant.
And I think the public has a reason to have sour grapes over the issue given what he has just done to tertiary eduaction in this country.

envy at its finest and on full display from the left
Even the labor party Shorten and crew have the decency not to attack the children of politicians or their families
Yet the left supporters and haters dont.. what a sad world we are being dragged into by the left
Mr Abbott's spokeswoman said that under the Statement of Registrable Interests, a scholarship is not a gift "it is an award based on merit and disclosure is not required".
However, she added that if the prime minister received alternative advice he would "meet the amended requirements".
