Shoppers Will Get Carbon Tax Cash

Supermarket shoppers should benefit from lower prices thanks to the abolition of the carbon tax, the retailers' industry body says.

"Today's outcome will go a long way in returning some certainty to business and consumers."

Mrs Osmond said retailers' confidence will begin to recover in the next six months, assisted by a strong housing market and low interest rates.

Meanwhile, WA Farmers welcomed the repeal of the carbon tax, saying it would help improve farming profits.

Once prices go up, they never ever come down again except in a weekly special.

That's a fact.

The government's budget remains a mess. The May statement remains in parliamentary deadlock. In an interview with The Australian Financial Review this morning, Clive Palmer has said the federal government has "little choice but to have a mini-budget or go back to the polls because the bulk of its budget measures will never pass the Senate." The alternative of course is for the government to try and salvage what it can by talking to Labor and the Greens. Although that's not looking too hopeful either.

THE consumer watchdog has warned businesses of "serious penalties" if price cuts from the carbon tax repeal are not passed on.THE Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has extra funding and toughened powers to act against businesses which supply electricity, gas, refrigerant gases and equipment such as refrigerators and air-conditioners which do not pass on savings."The ACCC will be keeping a close eye on prices to make sure that all cost savings go to consumers," ACCC chairman Rod Sims said on Thursday, just hours after parliament abolished the carbon tax. There are court-imposed penalties available of up to $1.1 million for a corporation or $220,000 for an individual. The court can also issue injunctions or declarations, make compensation orders or orders setting the maximum price of a good or requiring the supplier to pay refunds to consumershttp://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/breaking-news/watchdog-warning-on-carbon-tax-price-cuts/story-fni6ul2m-1...
