Shopping Trolley Hygiene. Ibis Don't Look!

MOST of us don't think twice when putting our groceries - and often our children - into shopping trolleys.

A fortnight ago, Mango Hill mother Michelle McPherson was one of those people. That was until a Halloween shopping trip left her with a feathered fright and a dead bird on her hands.

"We dropped into a shopping centre in Deception Bay to grab a few things for Halloween," she said.

"We did our shopping and came out and there was a trolley parked right in front of us.

"I went to move it and thought there was a Halloween costume or something in there."

Upon closer inspection, Ms McPherson discovered an ibis lying lifeless in the trolley.

"It looked like it must have been road kill," she said.

Posting her gruesome grocery find on social media, Ms McPherson said she was concerned about the health risks posed by shopping trolleys.

"Here's a good reason why shopping trolleys might not be the best place to hold your food," she posted.

"I don't know how many times I've seen little kids sitting and eating in them."

Parenting blogger and founder of the brisbanekids.com.au website, Ngaire Stirling, described the dead bird incident as an "extreme situation" and labelled concerns over trolley hygiene as an overreaction.

"I wonder what people would have the alternative be … spray the trolleys with Glen 20?" she said.

"I don't doubt my children have caught gastro from a shopping centre but what do you do … keep them at home?"

DO YOU WORRY ABOUT GERMS IN PUBLIC PLACES?

More so now than I did 20 years ago.

I do worry about it more now too but I try not to be too concerned.  I am aware of it when I'm pushing that trolley.

There is one thing I would like and I have probably said so before.  Supermarkets should supply hand wipes or disinfectant gel at the meat section.  I have picked up chicken trays and they leak all over you.  Then I go down to the toiletries section and nick some of the dettol hand sanitizer straight out of the bottle and put it on a lower shelf so no one buys it.

Our Coles now has wipes at the entrance, but it always seems to be empty.

I'm not a total germ freak but it has always made my blood run cold to see the number of babies that sit in shopping trollies happily gumming away on the cross bar.

No, I dont worry about germs when out. I have had 1 gastro bug the last 13 years. My children didn't have a lot of gastro bugs either as children.

I always wash my hands as soon as I get home...something my mother always made us do.

People most likely have more chance of spreading germs at home with manky dishwashing sponges etc.

Supermarkets here (NSW) have recently put in a metal holder thing, where you can pull dry wipes out of it. It says for wiping up spills  I think. I used one the other day as the watermelon I picked up (wrapped in gladwrap) was all wet and sticky.

That is disgraceful, theft even. You would be better to go to the service desk and ask them for a tissue or paper towel, and make them aware of your dissatisfaction.
