Shorten Flails as Turnbull Nails

In case Labor leader Bill Shorten had forgotten the cool, logical ruthlessness of his political opponent Malcolm Turnbull, he was given a sharp, painful reminder in a pivotal parliamentary exchange that gives Labor a glimpse of the hot hell that awaits it in the lead up to the next election.

Turnbull – the man who famously humiliated the British government as a young lawyer before he'd even conceived of starting his own bank or making a fortune out of something called the internet – quite simply wiped the floor with Labor.

There was no thundering refutations or excessive flourishes of oratory from Turnbull. Instead it was calm, reasoned and apparently honest response from Turnbull who had clearly put more thought to the questions of transparency and conflict of interest than Labor, which showed its own transparency in an altogether unflattering light.

Within the space of an hour, Turnbull called out Shorten as a cowardly leader by delegating the dirty work of smear politics to his subordinates, his shadow assistant treasurer and former university economist Andrew Leigh as a man who'd compromised his convictions in the name of politics, and Labor as a party uncomfortable with the concept of private enterprise.

"If the honourable member (Mr Burke) wants to go round wearing a sandwich board saying `Malcolm Turnbull's got a lot of money' feel free - I think people know that I've got a lot of money," he said.

Hiya Icy.

The whole of drama of Cayman Island "banking" has come a bit unstuck following the accusations thrown towards Mr Turnbull's banking history.

It appears that superannuation funds and even some Labor Ministers have funds in similar vaults.

What I find odd is that nobody appeared to attack Rudds wife. It is very embarrassing for Labor.

As I recall, Mr Rudd and Therese Rein sold  company/shares in an employment agency,  so that it would appear that there would be no conflicts of interest at the time of his Prime Ministership chase.

And yes, I agree it would be embarrassing but a learning experience surely, to get correct back-up information  before making accusations.

Dare I say, all politicians should gather accurate information and an understanding knowledge of the subject, prior to publicity-seeking headlines.

Meanwhile Malcolm 'We don't work for big business' Turnbull,

The government will not proceed with proposed tax disclosure laws, which means around 800 private companies will not have to publish details of their taxable income and the amount of they pay.
The changes were pushed through the Senate last night and are a blow to transparency, according to the Labor Party and the Tax Justice Network.
However Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull hit back at Labor during Question Time yesterday, according to Fairfax
, saying the tax disclosure laws were discriminatory towards “medium-sized” companies.
This is despite the fact that many of the companies affected by the tax disclosure rules are owned or founded by individuals on the BRWRich List.

I wonder if they are the same company that researched Mr Turnbull's (and some ALPmembers, superannuation funds) Cayman Island vault.

LS: "Dare I say, all politicians should gather accurate information and an understanding knowledge of the subject, prior to publicity-seeking headlines."

I do agree LS, however I would direct that suggestion at a few CS contributors, when it concerns economics.

"The government will not proceed with proposed tax disclosure laws, which means around 800 private companies will not have to publish details of their taxable income and the amount of they pay."

They actually do disclose their  annual income, to the ATO.

"amount of they pay" ??

How about trade unions are removed from tax exempt status?

How about trade unions and their executives publish their annual financial statements.

If you want a PRIVATE company to reveal all, let us have all private returns open for viewiing.

Morning icy,

An exquisite riposte and B.S. Shorten could only sit there and swallow it.

Now we are seeing the unions amalgamating to garner even more power to bring down a Conservative party and to make sure a Conservative party never gets elected again. It's frightening and alarming.

Even the left wing talking heads are ashamed at the antics of the Labor party.
