The centre was remote from the larger cities and generally attracted little attention from the Australian press.

An exception from this general rule was in 1949 when 13 newly arrived children died from malnutrition.

An official inquiry was critical of the inadequately staffed and equipped hospital.

There were protests about food and conditions in 1952 and Italian and German migrants staged a riot in 1961, smashing the employment office and clashing with police.

The protesters posted signs reading "We want work or back to Europe" and "Bonegilla camp without hope".

These two events embarrassed Australian authorities and saw a review of settlement policies

It's easily found on google.

These people were migrants, not refugees and they wanted jobs and homes, they knew it was a way station but they had nowhere to go without getting a job first.

Az, I did find some information on google.

The 13 children who died were apparently off a newly arrived boat, on which the children had been given unboiled water to drink.  And yes I agree, the health facilities were investigated.

The article also showed depiction of an "outdoor cafe style table" complete with umbrella that the Italians wanted.

I found the article below quite interesting and informative.

At Bonegilla, there were refugees and migrants together.  Many people from Europe at that time came straight from refugee camps as displaced people.  So both refugees and migrants ended up in similar migrant centers in Australia until they could find homes and jobs.

It was not perfect by any means, but it was shelter, food and a roof over their heads with other opportunities.

Similar centers in other countries were most likely no better or worse, who really knows?  However, perhaps it could be argued the something was better than nothing at all, and the chance to get out of the nightmare and start again must have been so good to reach for, and here they stayed, mostly.

Very interesting article, thank lloydslights, I read it right through, and it makes sense about the refugees and migrants together xx

Getting back to "names" though, as someone posted way back there, they do get shortened as is the Australian way and I kind of like that if the person whose name is shortened doesn't mind, but I'd never agree that it should be just because of change of country to suit others.  It used to happen in Iceland as one example where it was enforced, not now though.
