Should the Burqa be banned in Australia

Thanks for that refreshing bucket of cold water li.vish. Is there any chance of reminding the grammar police and spelling police that even though they have impeccable credentials they might show some understanding of what we mere mortals recognise as typing errors. Charientism, gently and elegantly delivered by you might work wonders.

Pot/kettle. Follow your own advice maybe?

There is a big difference in trying to get burqa's [sic] banned and new laws which would give police powers to be able to compel people to remove their headgear ( motorcycle helmets, burqa's etc) for identification checks.

Christopher Hitchens (speaking in 2009) has some interesting things to say about the burqa (among other things)

It's only eight and a half minutes long and didn't strain even my limited attention span. 😉

If they had all been through the two security points, I do not see any difference.

What if a person was bandaged over the face with only the eyes uncovered.  I wonder what would happen then.

I want proof before I believe anything this bunch of cretins have to say.  The niqab is worn by women so I don't see why one man would be allowed to wear it while the others were made remove their garments.  If they had half a brain they would not waste their time demonstrating that they are sexist bigots.

Those 3 with their head coverings, the head pieces confiscated and returned when they left.

Muslims have special priviliges to go in with head coverings but we are the racist ones when we can't get in with head coverings?

How do you work that out?

It's discrimination.

It was a stunt orchestrated by friends of Bernadi, with his support.

All they demostratred is their sexist idiocrity by sending up muslim women.

Slow learners. All they had to do was say that head coverings formed part of their religion. Their religion >name here< requires them to cover their head during the published daylight hours. Any head covering will suffice. Most Australians know that our Constitution allows people to follow their religion as long as it doesn't condone murder, rape etc.

I operate along those lines of do what you want as long as you can hide it behind religion. I own a black dog. I often take him for a walk. His name is mohammad. I love to call out his name when he tries to run off. My creator Tabulog told me to tag my dog with that name.

Should the Burqa be banned in Australia

Palmer United Party Senator Jacqui Lambie to introduce legislation to ban burqa, full face coverings in public

ANYONE who forces a child to wear a burqa in public could be jailed for a year and fined $68,000, under a draft law to be introduced by Jacqui Lambie.

The Palmer United Party Senator’s legislation would also make it an offence to “compel” an adult to wear a full face covering in public, with a fine of $34,000 or a maximum of six months in prison.

Additionally, the private member’s bill would make it unlawful to wear a full face covering in public “without reasonable excuse”.

Any person who is deemed by a police officer to have worn any identity concealing garments in public unlawfully, will be issued with an on-the-spot fine or charged with an offence which carries a maximum fine of $3,400,” the Tasmanian Senator said.

“The process will be very simple and similar to way traffic infringements are handled by police.”

Senator Lambie said “religious excuses” will not be accepted.

“The wearing of full-facial coverings is not mandated in any holy book.”

But she said there would be exemptions for the wearing of facial coverings in private places of worship and at home.

“In addition the prohibition of wearing face covering material or objects does not apply if such items are authorised by law, are authorised to protect the anonymity of the person, are justified for health reasons or on professional grounds, or are part of authorised artistic or traditional festivities or events,” she added.

The release of the draft legislation follows yesterday’s protest in Parliament House which saw three male members of the group ‘Faceless’ attempt to enter the building.

The trio — wearing a Ku Klux Klan mask, niqab and a motorcycle helmet — said they want to see the burqa banned.

“The facial covering farce and stunt which occurred in Parliament House yesterday, was caused by a leadership failure created by the PM and the Liberal/ National Parties,” Senator Lambie said.

“For basic security reasons and the need for assimilation, identity-concealing garments should not be allowed in Australian public or Parliament House.

“Once again, our enemies will laugh at us.

“France, Belgium and Turkey (an Islamic country) have all sorted this problem out. So can Australia. All it requires is some simple legislation, some courage and pride in the Australian culture.”

Full face is defined in the draft bill as meaning the surface of the front of the head from the top of the forehead to the base of the chin and the space in between, but not including the ears.
