Should there be laws to stop people living / building in bushfire prone areas?

and surrounding themselves in trees and bushland.

It seems very risky to live in these areas and very risky for the firefighters.

Discussion on insurance companies aside, this is an interesting article on the need to adapt housing designs to environs in which the house is being built.

Glenn Murcutt has built a number of houses in the Blue Mountains and other fire-prone areas, successfully adapting designs to suit conditions.  Mention is made of that in the linked article.

Having said that, local councils have been derelict in their duty, approving building applications in totally unsuitable and frankly dangerous locations.

Maybe for future houses being built, but  what about people who already live close to the bush?

It's risky to live anywhere. Fires can go through suburbs just as quickly and out of control. We live on the verge of rural....last summer were on stand by due to the amount of bush fires here. Main road was closed. Trains disrupted.

The problem with living within the bush is not ususally the occupants but the idiot polictians and the laws prohibiting the removal of surrounding bush to a safe level. The Greens are the worst! Same goes for the Alpine regions. Let the cattle graze there and keep the growth down.

Yes, I strongly believe you should be able to clear trees around your house.

not just applicable for bush fire prone areas.....

e.g. where I live is designated a 100 year flood plain......yet the local shire 'allows' new buildings Homes and businesses) to be built on the land as is and not to the specified 1.8m or 2.6m (applicable to area built in) above sea level as should be per the designated building levels.

.....all very suss

no, but there should be designs which are like concrete bunkers and build into the ground, to lessen the risk

I've always said I wouldn't live in the bush or near any waterways.

Do you think it might be more fire risky to live in the Blue Mountains than Bondi Beach?

I do realize fires can happen anywhere you know Smiley Very Happy
