Should there be laws to stop people living / building in bushfire prone areas?

and surrounding themselves in trees and bushland.

 

It seems very risky to live in these areas and very risky for the firefighters.

No, not laws AGAINST building or living in such areas, but much higher standards and requirements for the type of dwellings built, inbuilt safety measures etc.
Maybe to stretch it a bit, a requirement to upgrade existing dwellings over time.

Along with commonsense approaches to alllowing clearing of immediate surrounding land of fuel.
