Sinead O'Connor Writes Open Letter To Miley Cyrus

"Dear Miley,

I wasn’t going to write this letter, but today i’ve been dodging phone calls from various newspapers who wished me to remark upon your having said in Rolling Stone your Wrecking Ball video was designed to be similar to the one for Nothing Compares… So this is what I need to say… And it is said in the spirit of motherliness and with love."

"The music business doesn’t give a s__t about you, or any of us. They will prostitute you for all you are worth, and cleverly make you think its what YOU wanted.. and when you end up in rehab as a result of being prostituted, ‘they’ will be sunning themselves on their yachts in Antigua, which they bought by selling your body and you will find yourself very alone."

"You are worth more than your body or your sexual appeal. The world of showbiz doesn’t see things that way, they like things to be seen the other way, whether they are magazines who want you on their cover, or whatever. Don’t be under any illusions. ALL of them want you because they’re making money off your youth and your beauty, which they could not do except for the fact your youth makes you blind to the evils of show business. If you have an innocent heart you can’t recognise those who do not."

"Real empowerment of yourself as a woman would be to in future refuse to exploit your body or your sexuality in order for men to make money from you. I needn’t even ask the question. I’ve been in the business long enough to know that men are making more money than you are from you getting naked. It’s really not at all cool. And it’s sending dangerous signals to other young women. Please in future say no when you are asked to prostitute yourself. Your body is for you and your boyfriend. It isn’t for every spunk-spewing dirtbag on the net, or every greedy record company executive to buy his mistresses diamonds with."

Well said Sinead!

I'm absolutely in shock about Miley's VMA performance with Robin Thicke and her wrecking ball video. Whoever puts her up, her agents or managers,  definitely don't have her mental, emotional or physical well-being at heart.

I remember a caning for listening to Olivia Newton John's "Physical"

Violent Femme's in 1983 didn't go down to well either.

I like Rhianna, I downloaded Rhianna - son got detention at school for having it on his Ipad though *blush* he kept trying to delete it, but it kept coming back - and he got busted, poor kid.

he was mortified

Meep I remember how shocked everyone was back in the 60's when the Rolling Stones brought out the song "Let's Spend the Night Together"!

Music, TV and Movies, fashion and advertising have become progressivley more and more sexually explicit!

Kind of makes me wonder what happened about women not wanting to be treated as sex objects, which we all campaigned about back in the day?

Seems that's all everyone is aiming for these days!

gotta go be back later.

I saw and interview with Paul McCartney this morning, he spoke about Miley's performaces:

The 71-year-old star hit back at critics who have deemed her raunchy moves as being inappropriate, admitting that he's even happy to let his 10-year-old daughter watch her performances.

I think that Sinead O'Connor is quite right because Miley is a lot more than sex appeal and a body.  Perhaps without the naked wrecking ball video more would notice what a good song it is and how lovely her voice is.

One of my favourite songs on the radio at the moment I thought was sung by a young man but it turns out it is by an all female rock band.

might be interested in reading this:

Sinead O’Connor is on a tear, and it’s bringing women down. As Roxanne Gay points out in an insightful piece contextualizing the history of open letters, the form is often used to make political and personal arguments that, while they may be addressed to one person, are meant to be heard by many. Perhaps the genre’s weighty historical background is why Sinead O’Connor’s wordy assaults on Miley Cyrus feel stale and childish, especially coming from a 46-year-old. The fifth letter from Sinead recently hit the Internet and inspired me to write this, because enough is enough.

Hmm. Nuh. I disagree. I think Sinead hit the nail right on the head in her letter to Miley.

I love her voice, and her songs, but am of two minds about the Wrecking Ball video .  But recently I heard an

interview with a well-known entertainer and I'm mortified but I can't remember his name, and he reckons

that Miley knows exactly what she is doing and has a big management and PR team behind her, who ensure

that she is getting what she wants - -plenty of publicity.

Do I think her antics are over the top - yes, but I'm in the fuddy duddy group too, lol.

So many popular songs now are all about sax,  just listen to the words of Gorilla by \

Bruno Mars (I think).

Better still here's the clip

You know I tried to poke my tongue out sideways like that (like she does)  and close one eye winking (like she does) just to see what it was like - and got spit all on my cheek.
Yuk!

My grandkids thinks she's rude.

My 23yo grandson thinks she's a bad role model for young girls. All the while he's sitting at the restaurant regaling us with tales of his derring-do and evey second word is the F-word while he has two adoring little girls ( 7 and 11yo's) hangin on his every word.

He's very handsome.
