Fantastic choice as our new GG
Sir Peter Cosgrove has been sworn in as Australia's 26th Governor-General, declaring it "the greatest honour" of his family's "fortunate lives".
The former Defence chief is the first man to be knighted under Prime Minister Tony Abbott's revived honours system.
He used his swearing-in address in the Senate today to pay tribute to Indigenous Australians, his predecessor Dame Quentin Bryce, and Cameron Corporal Baird - the special forces commando who was posthumously awarded a Victoria Cross in February this year.
"We hail and salute Cameron Baird," he said. "He lives in the injured hearts of those he left too soon."
His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove, as he is now known, wore his string of military medals when he arrived at Parliament House in a motorcade.

I'll relate a bit so your BP stays down
Can't provide proof, I'd have to go to a public library, look up the Courier Mail of about ten years ago on microfische. And I ain't going to do that.
It was contained in an article about feminists or misogynists and men who were and men who were not. A man was invited to a function at parliament house, in fact if I remember, he was going to receive an award of some sort. He turned up with his wife, and an officious upstart at the door told him that she was not on the invitation list. So he left her outside and went inside to ring a cab to take her home. Someone realised what had happened, and went outside to retrieve her from the cab. She went inside. There were no other women there.
The opinion of the journalist (and me) was that he should have said something like "Either we both go in or none of us go in". In other words, demonstrated what he thought of the no women function, and insisted immediately that his wife be respected.
Believe it or not (Ripley)

A disgraceful slur trolled from years back to uphold your slur.
A slur on the new GG already??? well I suppose this is only to be expected as GG Quenton Bryce was so slimed on here, treated so badly by Mr Abbott that he extended her tenure, how dare he! that the leftards now hop into a decent man.

It isn't a slur. It is a fact. People behave in different ways in different situations. If you see that as a slur, then we are all guilty of it.
Who mentioned the GG?

Editorial standards have clearly dropped at the ABC. "Cameron Corporal Baird" ? It is Corporal Cameron Baird. And "wore his string of miltary medals" ? What did they expect him to wear - a tu-tu ?

The slur about leaving his wife outside? He knows more about protocol than any on here.
I have served my country (tick), I'm definitely in my autumn years (tick), and (I need to talk to my boss about this), am available for public service (tick) and I reckon I am honourable (tick)
So, ipso facto, this makes me deserving of all title (?), gratitude and respect.
I wait by my PO Box in anticipation of the call to service

I like Peter Cosgrove - I think he will make a good GG.
I have read some of his speeches and comments that I have not seen him deliver, and the interesting thing is when you read the text you can imagine him saying the words. There's a personal touch that realy comes through
I reckon some pollies would envy that. Still, they probably have someone else write what they say. 😉

I don't mind Cosgrove. I always worry when ex-military get these kind of offices but he has some good things to say about the mindlessness of war that I agree with so I will ignore his military background lol.
I hope he is as inspirational as Bryce was during her term.

And BTW, that 'incident' was highly reported at the time. But I can understand how it happened at that moment of having to make a quick decision.
I think generally (for an older, traditional man), he has a very good views on equality of the sexes fro all that I have read.
