Snapper fishing to be banned in SA waters

Snapper fishing to be banned in SA waters for more than three years, SA Government says

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-09-28/sa-statewide-snapper-fishing-ban-to-be-introduced-in-november...

there is a lot i dont agree with our state govt but on this one i do

for far too long the snapper have been over fished

as for the 'charter opererator' saying 'they have talked about snapper depleteing for 1o years but havent done anything to fix the problem'

well what did he do to fix the problem? he caught as many as he could i guess. that really helped didnt it?

we (humans) are greedy, we like something we just take it until its all gone.

i love snapper, next to whiting i think ts the best tasting fish you can buy in south australia.

i hope this ban works so i can eat it at a reasonable price until i cant any more.

i'm happy to wait 3 years

They would've kept fishing until the stocks were gone and then blamed the government for not doing anything.

Something similar was talked about in Ceduna years ago due to the amount of whiting tour operators were

catching (we watches one tour operator help clean over 100 fish for 4 paying guest who had no way of keeping

most of those fish and at least 20% of those fish were under sized).

Over 50 fish were given away to people that watched the whole thing (apparently it happened quite a bit).stubborn_smiley_by_mirz123-d4bt0te_zps12f1a5a3.gif

I,ve got mixed feelings about this. I do occasionally go on charter fishing boats around Kangaroo Island and look forward to catching a few Snapper. There are plenty of other species available though with Tuna in season and plenty of Salmon schools. On the subject of Whiting around Ceduna, one of my most memorable fishing trips was to Thistle Island off of Port Lincoln. This was around 1980 when the island was still run as a private sheep station. The island was deserted with the owner living in Port Lincoln, so we had the whole place to ourselves.

We stayed in the old station homestead which was located on a rise overlooking a beautiful long sandy beach. The old stone home didn't have any power and relied on gas & wood stoves and gas and Kero lamps for light. Each evening we would take a dinghy out fishing for Whiting. A school of dolphins would follow alongside the boat when the motor ran, so we would row to whiting holes.  No-one ever fished there, so it was a regular occurrence to catch double headers of the biggest whiting I have ever seen. Absolutely a magical experience that is unlikely to ever be repeated.

The developers purchased the island many years ago and carved it up into lifestyle blocks. They put in an airstrip and jetty and turned into just another holiday destination. Another beautiful isolated, natural wilderness trashed.........Its getting to the stage where it is almost impossible to find a bit of isolated, private paradise away from the throngs of people.

My father told me once about his old mate, Snowy. Snowy told him about how he used to go out shooting wallabies on Castle Hill in Townsville. He said, "When I was a lad we'd go out shooting wallabies every Saturday arvo, they were everywhere, all over the place . . . all gone now, all gone."
